Psittacus garrulus Linnaeus, 1758

The chattering lory (Lorius garrulus) is a super colorful parrot that lives in the forests of North Maluku, Indonesia. Sadly, this beautiful bird is considered vulnerable, which means its numbers are going down. The biggest reason for this is that people catch them to sell as pets.

The L. g. flavopalliatus type of chattering lory is also known as the yellow-backed lory.

About the Chattering Lory's Name

Have you ever wondered how animals get their names? The chattering lory was officially named in 1758 by a Swedish scientist named Carl Linnaeus. He gave it the scientific name Psittacus garrulus. The word garrulus comes from Latin and means "chattering" or "noisy," which fits this parrot perfectly!

Linnaeus learned about this bird from an English scientist named George Edwards. Edwards had drawn a picture of a live chattering lory that came all the way from the East Indies. Linnaeus said the bird came from "Asia," but we now know it's from the island of Halmahera in the Maluku Islands.

Today, the chattering lory is part of a group of birds called Lorius. This group was first described in 1825 by an Irish zoologist named Nicholas Aylward Vigors.

Different Kinds of Chattering Lories

There are three main types, or subspecies, of the chattering lory:

  • L. g. flavopalliatus: This one is called the Yellow-backed lory. You can find it on islands like Kasiruta, Bacan, Obi, and Mandiole.
  • L. g. garrulus: This is the original type. It lives on Halmahera, Widi, and Ternate Islands.
  • L. g. morotaianus: This type lives on Morotai and Rau Islands.

What Does a Chattering Lory Look Like?

The chattering lory is about 30 cm (12 in) long. It's mostly bright red, with a red head and a bright orange beak. The rings around its eyes are grey, and its eyes are orange-red.

Its wings are mostly green, but the part closest to its body is yellow. The parrot's upper legs are green, and its tail has a dark green tip. Its legs are dark grey. Some chattering lories have a yellow patch on their back, while others don't. This depends on which type of chattering lory it is.
