History of Ternate
Early Times
People have lived in Ternate for a very long time. Around 1250, some people moved from Halmahera to Ternate because of disagreements. They settled near the Gamalama mountain. The first leaders were called Momole.
In 1257, the leaders of different villages on Ternate decided to choose one ruler. They picked Cico, who became the first "Kolano," meaning "king." The capital moved a few times. Ternate started to become more powerful and took control of nearby islands.
Around 1322, the rulers of the Moluccas islands made an agreement called the Moti Agreement. This helped trade grow and kept things peaceful for a while. Ternate became a big trading port, especially for spices. Traders from China and Arab countries came to Ternate.
Later, Ternate became an Islamic sultanate under Sultan Zainal Abidin (1468–1500). The ruler's title changed from "Kolano" to "Sultan." This also brought new ways of governing, like having a council of religious leaders.
European Arrivals and Conflicts
Ternate and Tidore were the main places in the world that produced cloves. This made their rulers very rich and powerful. They often fought each other for control of the spice trade.
The Sultanate of Ternate was strongest in the late 1500s under Sultan Baabullah. Its influence reached many islands, including parts of Sulawesi and Papua.
Islam spread to Ternate from Java in the late 1400s. At first, only the royal family followed Islam, but then it spread to more people.
The first Europeans to arrive were the Portuguese in 1512. Sultan Abu Lais of Ternate welcomed them. He hoped to make an alliance with them. The Portuguese were allowed to build Fort Kastela on the island.
However, the Portuguese were not always good guests. They tried to control the spice trade and local politics. They also tried to spread Christianity, which caused problems with the Muslim rulers. In 1570, Sultan Hairun was killed by the Portuguese. This made the people of Ternate very angry. They fought back and forced the Portuguese out of their fort in 1575. Sultan Babullah then used the fort as his palace.
In 1579, the famous English explorer Francis Drake visited Ternate. He was more interested in the gold he had taken from Spanish ships than in buying cloves.
Later, the Spanish and Dutch also came to Ternate. They both wanted to control the valuable clove trade. The Spanish captured the old Portuguese fort in 1606 and sent the Sultan of Ternate to Manila. In 1607, the Dutch built their own fort in Ternate. The island was then split between the Spanish and the Dutch. The Spanish were friends with Tidore, and the Dutch were friends with Ternate.
For the Ternatean rulers, the Dutch were helpful because they provided military support against Tidore and the Spanish. Ternate grew its territory under Sultan Hamzah (1627–1648). The Spanish left Ternate in 1663. Some people from Ternate went with them to the Philippines.
By the 1800s, the spice trade was not as important. The Dutch still stayed in Ternate to make sure no other European country took over. Ternate became part of the Dutch government's control. In 1810, the British took over Ternate for a short time, but it was returned to the Dutch in 1817.
Modern Times
During World War II, Japanese forces occupied Ternate. After the war, Indonesia became independent. Ternate became a city in 1946, then a district, and then a city again in 1981. The Sultanate of Ternate still exists today, but the sultan's role is mostly cultural.
Ternate was the main capital of the new North Maluku province until 2010. Even though Sofifi is now the official capital, Ternate is still the busiest and most important city in the province.
