Virginia Pound (born July 26, 1917, died April 30, 2017) was an American actress. She was known by her stage names, Lorna Gray and later Adrian Booth. She became famous for her funny roles and sometimes played villains. She was especially known for her short comedy films and adventure series.
Early Life
Lorna Gray was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan. When she was young, her family faced tough times during the Great Depression. Before becoming an actress, she sang in a group called Ben Yost's Varsity Coeds. They performed in movie theaters before the main film started.
Acting Career
Lorna Gray had a film test at Universal Studios. She also had a short contract with Paramount Pictures. Her first big movie was for Columbia Pictures.
At Columbia, she acted in many short films and adventure series. These included Flying G-Men and Pest from the West. She also appeared with The Three Stooges in You Nazty Spy!.
After her Columbia contract ended, she worked at Monogram Pictures. There, she acted with action star Frankie Darro. She also starred with John Wayne in Red River Range (1938). In 1943, she played the main role in O, My Darling Clementine. This was a country music film.
When she started at Paramount, she was called Virginia Pound. Columbia Pictures gave her the name Lorna Gray. She used this name from 1938 until 1945. Then she moved to Republic Pictures. She was still called Lorna Gray in Republic's Federal Operator 99. But after that, she started using the name Adrian Booth.
At Republic, she often had a main role in Western movies. She was one of the few women to get such high billing at that studio. She also starred in Republic's adventure series about the superhero Captain America.
Later Life and Awards
Lorna Gray married actor David Brian on July 19, 1949. She stopped acting in movies in 1951. As Adrian Booth, she received the Golden Boot Award in 1998. This award honors actors who have made important contributions to Western films. She continued to attend film festivals even when she was in her nineties. She was a special guest at a Three Stooges convention in 2011.
