Los Ebanos is a small community in Hidalgo County, Texas, United States. It's called a census-designated place (CDP), which means it's an area identified by the United States Census Bureau for statistical purposes, but it's not an officially incorporated city or town. In 2020, about 239 people lived there.
Los Ebanos is part of the larger McAllen–Edinburg–Mission metropolitan area. The community gets its name from the Texas Ebony tree (Ebenopsis ebano). This special tree is important because it anchors the unique Los Ebanos Ferry.
Geography and Location
Los Ebanos is located in southern Texas, very close to the border with Mexico. Its exact position is about 26.24 degrees North and 98.56 degrees West.
The community covers a total area of about 0.6 square miles (1.5 square kilometers), and all of it is land. A very important feature of Los Ebanos is that it serves as an official border crossing between the United States and Mexico. This crossing is done using the Los Ebanos-Diaz Ordaz Ferry.
Los Ebanos Ferry
The Los Ebanos Ferry is quite special because it's one of the last hand-operated cable ferries on the Rio Grande river. It connects Los Ebanos in Texas with Gustavo Díaz Ordaz, Tamaulipas in Mexico. This ferry helps people and goods travel between the two countries.
