The Los Rios Historic District is a very special neighborhood in San Juan Capistrano, California. It's known for being the oldest neighborhood in California where people have lived continuously since 1794! That's a really long time ago.
This area was important because it was close to the Mission San Juan Capistrano. It was the very first of the 21 California Missions where Native Americans, soldiers, and workers lived outside the mission walls.
A Glimpse into History
The Los Rios neighborhood originally had about 40 homes made of adobe. Adobe is a natural building material made from earth, water, and straw. It was very common for homes in California back then.
Over time, in the 1800s, many of these adobe homes were replaced. New houses were built using wood, often in a style called board and batten. This means wooden boards were placed side-by-side, and then thin strips of wood (battens) covered the gaps.
Today, only three of the original adobe homes remain in the Los Rios neighborhood. However, there are still many other old buildings nearby that were once part of this larger historic area.
A Protected Place
In 1983, thirty-one of the buildings on Los Rios Street and the surrounding area were added to the National Register of Historic Places. This is a special list of places in the United States that are important to history. Being on this list helps protect these buildings so they can be enjoyed for many more years.
