Playing career 1962–1975

Louis Frederick Angotti (born January 16, 1938 – died September 15, 2021) was a Canadian ice hockey player. He was also a coach. He played for ten seasons in the National Hockey League (NHL). Lou played for teams like the New York Rangers and Chicago Black Hawks. He also played for the Philadelphia Flyers, Pittsburgh Penguins, and St. Louis Blues. His NHL career lasted from 1964 to 1974.

Lou Angotti's Early Life and College Hockey

Lou Angotti was born in Toronto, Canada, on January 16, 1938. He started playing junior hockey for the Toronto St. Michael's Majors. After that, he went to Michigan Tech University. There, he studied engineering while playing for their strong college hockey teams.

Lou played in two NCAA championship games. His team lost in 1960 but won the championship in 1962. He was named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) in both tournaments. He was also chosen for the All-WCHA First Team in 1961–62.

Lou Angotti's Professional Hockey Career

Lou Angotti signed with the New York Rangers of the National Hockey League (NHL). He played two seasons with a minor league team, the Rochester Americans. Then, in the 1964–65 season, he joined the Rangers. Lou quickly became known for his fast and energetic style of play.

Over the next nine seasons, he played for several NHL teams. These included the Chicago Black Hawks, Philadelphia Flyers, Pittsburgh Penguins, and St. Louis Blues. His best season for scoring points was in 1967–68 with the Flyers. He scored 49 points and was the team's first captain.

During his second time playing for Chicago (from 1969 to 1973), he was a key defensive player. His team almost won the Stanley Cup two times during this period.

Lou Angotti as a Coach

In his last season playing for the St. Louis Blues in 1973–74, Lou Angotti became a coach. He took over after the previous coach was fired. He then retired from playing to coach full-time. However, he was fired just nine games into the next season.

After that, he went back to playing hockey for the Chicago Cougars in the World Hockey Association (WHA). Lou also coached again during the 1983–84 season. This time, he coached the Pittsburgh Penguins. He also coached three different teams in the American Hockey League (AHL) for one season each. These teams were the New Brunswick Hawks, Erie Blades, and Baltimore Skipjacks.

Lou Angotti's Later Life

After his hockey career, Lou Angotti worked as a sports commentator. He talked about Chicago Blackhawks games on TV and radio. He was first honored in the Michigan Tech Sports Hall of Fame in 1991 for his playing. He was honored again in 2012 with his 1962 team. This was to celebrate 50 years since their first NCAA championship win. Lou also often took part in community events with the Chicago Blackhawk Alumni Association.

Lou Angotti passed away on September 15, 2021, at Holy Cross Hospital in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He was 83 years old.
