Lough Acoose is a beautiful freshwater lake located in the southwest of Ireland. It's found on the Iveragh Peninsula in County Kerry. The lake sits close to the impressive MacGillycuddy's Reeks mountains. This makes Lough Acoose a special place, known for its natural beauty and the interesting creatures that live there.
Where is Lough Acoose?
Lough Acoose is a medium-sized lake. It stretches about 1 km (0.6 mi) long and 0.5 km (0.3 mi) wide. You can find it about 7 kilometres (4 mi) south of a town called Killorglin. It's also near the small village of Glencar. The lake sits in a lovely valley, surrounded by hills and mountains.
Animals and Nature at Lough Acoose
Lough Acoose is home to many different types of fish. You can find brown trout, Arctic char, and salmon swimming in its waters. The lake is also home to the European eel, which is a critically endangered species. This means it's very important to protect them.
Lough Acoose is part of a larger protected area. This area is called the Killarney National Park, MacGillycuddy's Reeks and Caragh River Catchment Special Area of Conservation. A Special Area of Conservation (SAC) is a place chosen to protect important natural habitats and species. This helps to keep the lake and its surroundings safe for all the plants and animals that live there.
