Louis d'Orléans (born August 4, 1703 – died February 4, 1752) was an important French prince. He held the title of Duke of Orléans. He was also known as a prince du sang, which means he was a prince of the royal blood. When his father passed away, Louis became the First Prince of the Blood (Premier Prince du Sang).
People called him Louis le Pieux (Louis the Pious) because he was very religious. He was also known as Louis le Génovéfain. Louis was a kind and educated prince. He spent little time in the politics of his era.

Early Life and Family
Louis d'Orléans was born at the famous Palace of Versailles in 1703. His father was Philippe II, Duke of Orléans. His mother was Françoise Marie de Bourbon. She was the youngest daughter of King Louis XIV and Madame de Montespan.
When he was born, Louis received the title of Duke of Chartres. This was a special title given to him. His mother and his grandmother, Elizabeth Charlotte of the Palatinate, raised him. Louis was very close to his younger sister, Louise Élisabeth d'Orléans. When his father died on December 2, 1723, Louis became the new Duke of Orléans.
Marriage and Family Life
On June 18, 1724, Louis married Johanna of Baden-Baden. Johanna (1704–1726) was the daughter of Louis William, Margrave of Baden-Baden. Her mother was Sibylle Auguste of Saxe-Lauenburg. Louis and Johanna were very happy together.
Sadly, Johanna died in 1726 while giving birth. Louis was heartbroken and mourned her deeply. He chose not to marry again after her death.
Children of Louis d'Orléans
Louis and Johanna had two children:
- Louis Philippe d'Orléans (born May 12, 1725 – died November 18, 1785). He married Louise Henriette de Bourbon in 1743 and had children.
- Louise Marie d'Orléans (born August 5, 1726 – died May 14, 1728). She passed away when she was very young.
Later Life and Death
Louis d'Orléans passed away in 1752. He was forty-eight years old. He died at the Abbaye de Sainte Geneviève in Paris. He was buried at the Val-de-Grâce in Paris.
Titles and Royal Status
Throughout his life, Louis held several important titles:
- August 4, 1703 – December 2, 1723: He was known as His Serene Highness the Duke of Chartres.
- December 2, 1723 – February 4, 1752: He was known as His Serene Highness the Duke of Orléans.
- He was also called Monsieur le Prince, which showed his high rank among the royal princes.
