Louis-Michel van Loo (born March 2, 1707, in Toulon, France – died March 20, 1771, in Paris, France) was a famous French painter. He was known for his beautiful portraits of important people.

Life and Art Journey

Early Training and Success

Louis-Michel van Loo learned how to paint from his father, Jean-Baptiste van Loo, who was also a painter. He studied art in cities like Turin and Rome. In 1725, he won a special prize at the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture in Paris. This was a big achievement for a young artist!

From 1727 to 1732, he traveled to Rome again, this time with his uncle, Charles-André van Loo, who was also a talented painter. These travels helped him learn even more about art.

Working for Kings and Queens

In 1736, Louis-Michel van Loo became a "court painter" for Philip V of Spain in Madrid. A court painter is an artist who works directly for a king or queen and paints their portraits and other important artworks. While in Spain, he also helped create the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando in 1752. This academy was a new school for artists.

Return to Paris and Famous Portraits

Louis-Michel van Loo returned to Paris in 1753. There, he painted many portraits of King Louis XV of France. These paintings helped people remember what the king looked like.

In 1765, he took over from his uncle, Charles-André, as the director of a special art school called the École Royale des Élèves Protégés. This school helped young artists learn and grow. In 1766, he painted a portrait of a very important Portuguese leader named Sebastião de Melo, who was the Marquis of Pombal.

His Painting Family

Louis-Michel van Loo came from a family of artists. His brothers, François van Loo (1708–1732) and Charles-Amédée-Philippe van Loo (1719–1795), were also painters.
