Sir Pierre Louis Napoleon Cavagnari (born 1841, died 1879) was an important British official. He worked as a military administrator in British India. He was known for his role in dealing with Afghanistan.

Early Life and Background

Pierre Louis Napoleon Cavagnari was born in 1841. His father was Count Louis Adolphus Cavagnari from Parma, Italy. Pierre later became a British citizen. He joined the military service of the East India Company.

Working in British India

In 1861, Cavagnari became an assistant commissioner in the Punjab region of British India. This was an important job helping to manage the area. Later, in 1877, he became the deputy commissioner of Peshawar. Peshawar is now a city in Pakistan. He also took part in several trips against the Pathan tribes.

A Diplomat in Afghanistan

The Mission to Kabul

In September 1878, Cavagnari joined a British group going to Kabul, Afghanistan. The Afghan leaders did not want this British group in their country. They refused to let them enter.

The Treaty of Gandamak

In May 1879, British-Indian soldiers entered Afghanistan. After the death of the Afghan leader, Emir Sher, Cavagnari helped make a peace agreement. He negotiated and signed the Treaty of Gandamak with Sher Ali's son, Yaqub Khan. This treaty allowed a British representative to live in Kabul.

His Final Days

Cavagnari was chosen to be this British representative. He moved to Kabul in July 1879. However, on September 3, 1879, a sad event happened. Afghan soldiers rebelled against the British. Cavagnari and the other European members of the mission were killed. Their guards, who were soldiers from the Corps of Guides, were also killed.
