Louis Felix Danner Mahoney (born September 8, 1938 – died June 28, 2020) was a British actor from The Gambia. He lived in Hampstead, London. Louis Mahoney was also a strong activist who fought against racism. He worked hard to make sure everyone had equal chances in acting. He even helped lead the actors' union, Equity, as a Vice-President from 1994 to 1996.

Louis Mahoney was born in The Gambia in 1938. In the late 1950s, he moved to England. He first planned to become a doctor. However, he soon changed his mind and decided to study acting. He joined the Central School of Speech and Drama in the 1960s.

Starting His Acting Career

After finishing drama school, Louis Mahoney began his acting career. He worked with different theater groups. In 1967, he joined the Royal Shakespeare Company. This was a big step, as he was one of the first black actors to be part of this famous company. He continued to act on stage throughout his life. He performed in many well-known theaters, like the National Theatre and the Young Vic. His last stage show was Allelujah! in 2018.

Louis Mahoney's very last TV appearance was in a show for kids. He played Henry Lawrence in The Dumping Ground. This show is a spin-off from the popular Tracy Beaker series on CBBC.

Fighting for Fairness

Louis Mahoney was a dedicated activist. He spent many years fighting for racial equality in the acting world. He was a member of the Equity Afro-Asian Committee. He even helped change its name from the "Coloured Actors Committee."

He also helped start a group called Performers Against Racism. This group worked to oppose apartheid in South Africa. Apartheid was a system of unfair racial separation. In 1976, he also helped create the UK's Black Theatre Workshop. He worked with Mike Phillips and Taiwo Ajai on this project.

His Lasting Impact

Louis Mahoney passed away on June 28, 2020, at the age of 81. He lived in Hampstead, London, for many decades.

To honor his memory, the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama started the Louis Mahoney Scholarships. These scholarships help Black students and students from global majority backgrounds. They encourage these students to apply to the school. The scholarships began in 2021 and support one undergraduate and one postgraduate student each year.
