Meet the Main Characters
The hotel is owned by Basil Fawlty (played by John Cleese). His wife, Sybil (Prunella Scales), also helps run the hotel.
They get help from Polly, a young British maid (Connie Booth). Manuel, a clumsy waiter from Barcelona in Spain, is also part of the team (Andrew Sachs).
In later episodes, starting from the second series, a chef named Terry (Brian Hall) joins the staff.
Basil is often rude and gets angry easily. He was a soldier in the Korean War. He and Sybil have been married for fifteen years, but they often argue. Polly is good at painting, and her artwork sometimes appears in the hotel lobby. Manuel speaks only a little English, which leads to many funny mistakes. When Manuel messes up, Basil often tells guests, "I'm so sorry, he's from Barcelona."
Other Hotel Guests
The Major (Ballard Berkeley) is a regular guest at the hotel. He is old and tends to forget things. Miss Tibbs (Gilly Flower) and Miss Gatsby (Renee Roberts) are also regular guests. They are elderly and easily shocked by events.
