Louise Ingram Rayner (born June 21, 1832, died October 8, 1924) was a talented British artist. She was famous for her beautiful watercolour paintings. She often painted busy street scenes in old British towns.

Her Artistic Family

Louise Rayner was born in Matlock Bath, a town in Derbyshire, England. Her parents, Samuel Rayner and Ann Rayner, were both well-known artists. Her father, Samuel, even had his art shown at the Royal Academy of Arts when he was only 15 years old!

Louise came from a very artistic family. Four of her sisters—Ann (Nancy), Margaret, Rose, and Frances—were also artists. Her brother, Richard, was an artist too. Her oldest sister, Ann Ingram Rayner (Nancy), also showed her paintings at important art places like the Royal Academy.

The Rayner family lived in Matlock Bath and Derby for many years. In 1842, they moved to London.

Learning to Paint

Louise started learning to paint when she was 15 years old. First, her father taught her. Later, she learned from other famous artist friends of her family. These artists included George Cattermole, Edmund Niemann, David Roberts, and Frank Stone.

In 1852, Louise showed her first painting at the Royal Academy. It was an oil painting called The Interior of Haddon Chapel. She painted several more oil paintings after that.

After 1860, Louise Rayner mostly used watercolours for her art. She showed her watercolour paintings for over 50 years! Her art was displayed at many important places. These included the Society of Lady Artists, the Royal Academy, and the Royal Watercolour Society.

Painting British Towns

Louise lived in Chester, a city in Cheshire, England. But she traveled a lot during the summers in the 1870s and 1880s. She visited many British towns and cities to paint their scenes.

Her paintings are very detailed. They show busy street scenes filled with people. She captured the "old-world" charm of British towns during the Victorian era. Her paintings are still very popular today. You can find them as prints and even on jigsaw puzzles!

Around 1910, Louise moved with her sister to Tunbridge Wells. Later, she moved to St Leonards-on-Sea, where she passed away on October 8, 1924. She was 92 years old.

Where to See Her Art

You can find Louise Rayner's beautiful artwork in several art collections. Some of her paintings are at the Russell-Cotes Art Gallery & Museum in Bournemouth. Others are at the Derby Museum and Art Gallery. The Grosvenor Museum in Chester has the largest public collection of her watercolours, with 23 of her pieces.
