Early Life and Art Training

Lovie Olivia grew up in Houston, Texas. She went to the Kinder High School for the Performing and Visual Arts (HSPVA). This school helped her develop her artistic talents.

What Her Art Is About

Lovie Olivia is known as a multidisciplinary artist. This means she works with many types of art. She uses printmaking, painting, and installation art. She also uses fresco painting, which is a special way of painting on wet plaster.

Olivia often creates large artworks on wood panels. She covers these panels with many layers of plaster. Then she paints on the plaster, sometimes carving into it too.

Her art often explores important topics about identity. She looks at how people's backgrounds and experiences shape who they are. She wants to show the many different sides of identity. Her art helps us understand how unique and complex each person's story can be.

For example, in her artwork called Thrice Removed, she used different art forms. She wanted to show that identity is not simple. It has many layers and can be a mix of different things. Her "contemporary frescoes" in this show were a new step in her artistic journey.

Lovie Olivia has received special recognition for her art. She won the Individual Artist Grant Award in 2009 and again in 2014. These awards came from the Houston Arts Alliance and the City of Houston. They helped her continue making art.

In 2018, she was part of a group that chose artists for new mini-murals in Houston. She is also a member of the ROUX artist collective. This is a group of artists who work together. Other members include Ann Johnson, Rabéa Ballin, and Delita Martin.
