Lovre Kalinić (born on April 3, 1990) is a professional football player from Croatia. He plays as a goalkeeper for the team Hajduk Split.

Club Career

Playing for Hajduk Split

Lovre Kalinić first played for HNK Hajduk Split on April 23, 2011. He was 21 years old at the time. This game was a Prva HNL match against NK Slaven Belupo, which his team won 2–1.

Before becoming a regular player for Hajduk, Lovre was loaned out to other teams. He played for Junak Sinj in 2009, Novalja in 2010, and Karlovac in 2012. In the 2013–14 season, Hajduk's manager, Igor Tudor, brought him back to be the main goalkeeper.

In the 2015–16 season, Kalinić set an amazing record in the 1. HNL league. He played for 775 minutes, or eight games, without letting any goals in. This was a new record, beating the old one of 711 minutes.

Because he was part of the Croatian squad for UEFA Euro 2016, Kalinić missed the first few games of Hajduk's 2016–17 season. He returned to play on July 28, 2016. In that game, Hajduk beat FC Oleksandriya 3–0 in a 2016-17 UEFA Europa League qualifying match, and he kept a clean sheet. In September 2016, Kalinić signed a new five-year contract with Hajduk. He played 134 official games for Hajduk over seven seasons. Overall, he spent 17 years with Hajduk, including his time as a youth player.

Moving to Gent

On December 27, 2016, Hajduk announced that Lovre Kalinić had played his last game for the club. He moved to Belgian First Division A team K.A.A. Gent. The transfer fee was €3.1 million, which was the highest amount ever paid for a goalkeeper from the Prva HNL league. This also made Kalinić the most expensive player in Gent's history. Even though he only played for half a season after joining Gent in January, he was named the Best Goalkeeper in the Belgian league for the 2016–17 season.

Playing for Aston Villa

On December 21, 2018, the English Championship club Aston Villa announced they would sign Kalinić. He joined the team officially on January 1, 2019. Aston Villa had tried to sign him before in 2016, but he couldn't get a work permit at that time. He signed a contract that would last until the end of the 2022–23 season.

He played his first game for Aston Villa on January 5, 2019, in an FA Cup match against Swansea City, which they lost 3–0. His first league game was a week later, also a 3–0 loss, against Wigan Athletic. After that, they drew 2–2 with Hull City. This meant Kalinić had let in 8 goals in his first 3 games. His last game for Aston Villa was on February 16, 2019, against West Bromwich Albion.

Loan to Toulouse

On January 20, 2020, Kalinić joined Ligue 1 club Toulouse on loan until the end of the 2019–20 season. However, he only played four games before the league was stopped because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Loan back to Hajduk Split

On December 22, 2020, it was announced that Kalinić would go back to Hajduk Split on loan. He had not played any games for Aston Villa in the 2020–21 season before this. The loan started on January 18, 2021. On January 22, he played his second debut game for Hajduk, a 1–0 league win against Šibenik.

On July 11, 2021, Aston Villa announced that Kalinić would join Hajduk Split for another season on loan. Kalinić explained that Aston Villa wanted to sell him to another club. However, he really wanted to return to Hajduk Split because he had been named the club captain. Eventually, all teams agreed to a second loan season.

Permanent Return to Hajduk Split

On July 1, 2022, Kalinić signed with Hajduk Split permanently. The details of the transfer were not officially announced by either club, but it was thought to be a free transfer.

International Career

After Stipe Pletikosa retired from international football in 2014, Kalinić became the second-choice goalkeeper for Croatia. The main goalkeeper was Danijel Subašić. Kalinić played his first game for Croatia in November 2014, in a friendly match against Argentina. He was also part of Croatia's team for UEFA Euro 2016.

In May 2018, he was chosen for Croatia's 23-man squad for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia. He played in the last group stage match against Iceland and made some important saves. Croatia ended up as the runners-up in the tournament, losing to France in the final.

After the World Cup, Subašić retired from playing for the national team. Kalinić then became the first-choice goalkeeper for Croatia. However, due to injuries and not playing as well, he later became a reserve goalkeeper again. Dominik Livaković took over as the main goalkeeper.

He was a substitute player at the delayed UEFA Euro 2020, but Livaković played all four matches. Kalinić was also on the standby list for the 2022 FIFA World Cup. His last game for Croatia was a friendly match against Georgia in November 2019. Croatia won that match 2-1.
