Club Career Highlights
Starting at Hajduk Split
Lovre Kalinić began his journey with HNK Hajduk Split at a young age. He played in their youth teams for many years. His first game for the senior team was on April 23, 2011. He was 21 years old at the time.
Before becoming a regular player for Hajduk, Lovre spent time on loan. He played for clubs like Junak Sinj, Novalja, and Karlovac. These loans helped him gain valuable experience. In 2013, he returned to Hajduk Split and became their main goalkeeper.
Setting a New Record
During the 2015–16 season, Kalinić achieved something special. He set a new record in the 1. HNL (Croatia's top league). He played for 775 minutes without letting any goals in. This means he kept a "clean sheet" for eight games in a row. This was a new record for the league.
Lovre played 134 official games for Hajduk Split. He spent a total of 17 years with the club, including his time in their youth academy.
Moving to Gent
In December 2016, Lovre Kalinić moved to K.A.A. Gent, a team in Belgium. This transfer was a big deal. The fee paid for him was the highest ever for a goalkeeper from the Croatian league. It was also the most expensive player transfer in Gent's history.
Even though he only played half a season after joining Gent in January 2017, he quickly made an impact. He was named the Best Goalkeeper in the Belgian league for the 2016–17 season.
Time at Aston Villa
On December 21, 2018, Lovre signed with Aston Villa, an English club. They had tried to sign him before, but he couldn't get a work permit. He officially joined the team in January 2019.
He played his first game for Aston Villa in an FA Cup match. His league debut followed a week later. He played a few games for the club before his time there ended.
Loan to Toulouse
In January 2020, Kalinić went on loan to Toulouse, a club in France. He played four games for them. However, the league season was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Returning to Hajduk Split on Loan
In December 2020, Lovre returned to his former club, Hajduk Split, on loan. He had not played any games for Aston Villa that season. He made his second debut for Hajduk in January 2021.
He enjoyed his time back at Hajduk. In July 2021, he rejoined them for another season on loan. He even became the club captain.
Permanent Return to Hajduk Split
On July 1, 2022, Lovre Kalinić officially signed a permanent deal with Hajduk Split. This meant he was back at his home club for good.
International Career
Playing for Croatia
After the 2014 World Cup, Lovre Kalinić became the second-choice goalkeeper for the Croatian national team. He played his first game for Croatia in November 2014. He was also part of Croatia's team for the UEFA Euro 2016 tournament.
2018 FIFA World Cup
In May 2018, Lovre was chosen for Croatia's 23-man squad for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia. He played in one group stage match against Iceland, making important saves. Croatia had an amazing tournament, reaching the final. They finished as runners-up, losing to France.
After the World Cup, Croatia's main goalkeeper retired. This made Kalinić the first-choice goalkeeper for a while. However, due to injuries, he later became a reserve player again. His last game for Croatia was in November 2019.
