History of Lower Cascades
The Lower Cascades waterfall was first seen by Europeans a long time ago. A German scientist named Lewis David von Schweinitz discovered it. Because he found it, the waterfall was first called Schweinitz Falls. Sometimes, it was also known as Schweinitz Cascades.
Geology and Formation of the Falls
The water that forms the Lower Cascades comes from Cascades Creek. This creek flows right through Hanging Rock State Park. The waterfall has a cool feature: an overhanging rock bluff. This means part of the rock hangs out over the water. At the bottom of the falls, there's a large pool of water. This is called a plunge pool.
Visiting Lower Cascades Waterfall
The Lower Cascades are open for everyone to visit. You can get to the falls from a parking area on Hall Road. From there, you can take a trail that is about 0.3 miles (0.5 kilometers) long. This trail is considered to be of moderate difficulty.
In the past, the end of the trail was very tricky. It had a dangerous cliff that was hard to climb. But now, it's much easier and safer! Stairs have been added to help visitors get down to the plunge pool. This makes it simple for you to reach the base of the waterfall.
