The area around Lower Fagu Tea Garden is part of the Kalimpong Range. It has hills that rise sharply and many small streams. The elevation here can be anywhere from 300 to 3,000 meters high. Most people in this region live in villages, with about 77% of the population living in rural areas.

The economy here mainly depends on farming. There are six tea gardens in the Gorubathan area. Education is important, and in 2011, the Kalimpong area had a high literacy rate of over 81%. This means most people can read and write.

The Village Itself

Lower Fagu Tea Garden is located on the eastern side of the Chel river, near Sombaray Bazar. To the south, it is next to the Bhuttabari forest. To the north, it borders Ahaley Busty, and to the east, Mission Hill Tea Estate.

The village is about 60 kilometers from Siliguri and 20 kilometers from Mal Bazar. It is also very close, just 2 kilometers, to Sombaray Bazar. The local police station for this area is in Gorubathan.

Population Details

According to the 2011 Census of India, Lower Fagu Tea Garden had a total population of 2,070 people. About 1,017 (49%) were males and 1,053 (51%) were females. There were 218 children aged 0 to 6 years old. Most people in the village, about 1,356 (73.22%) of those over 6 years old, were able to read and write.

Getting Around

Lower Fagu Tea Garden is easy to reach by road. The closest train station is New Mal Junction, which is about 20 kilometers away. You can get to Fagu by bus, small vehicles, or hired taxis from nearby cities. These include Siliguri, Jalpaiguri, Darjeeling, Mal Bazar, Gangtok, and Kalimpong. A major road, National Highway 717A, also passes through Fagu.

Local Economy

The main market for Lower Fagu is Sombaray Bazar. This is a weekly market held every Monday. People from the village go there to buy their household items and other necessities. There is also a smaller village market called Ganti. It is held every Saturday in front of the Fagu tea factory. Here, local sellers offer fresh vegetables and food items grown nearby.

The area is also a big supplier of Areca Nut, also known as betel nut. Local people often sell their areca nut gardens to business people. These business people then send the nuts to different places.

Education in Lower Fagu

Lower Fagu has its own primary school, the Lower Fagu Primary School, which opened in 1956. It is run by the District Primary Board. Many students here are children of tea garden workers. Another school nearby is Sanatan Vedic Primary School, established in 1986. Some students from Lower Fagu also attend this school. There is also a private school called Morning Glory English School.

After finishing primary school, students usually go to Judhabir Higher Secondary School. Some also attend private schools or other educational places in Kalimpong, Darjeeling, and Siliguri. The only degree college in the Gorubathan area is Government General Degree College, Gorubathan. It offers courses in Arts and Science and was opened in 2015. This college is located in Lower Fagu, on the Fagu - Mission Hill Road.

Things to See and Do

The main attraction in Lower Fagu is the beautiful green tea gardens. The green hills around Fagu offer amazing views. You can also visit the Fagu Bungalow, located at the northern end of Lower Fagu. This bungalow was built by British tea garden owners a long time ago. Now, it has been turned into "The Fagu Reserve" (you can find more info at www.thereserve.in). From here, you can enjoy views of the Tarai areas, rivers, and the Dooars region.

There are also important religious sites in Lower Fagu. The Gupteswar Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, is a famous Hindu temple in the area. There is also a Roman Catholic Church called St. Francis of Assisi, located in the center of Lower Fagu. A temple for Sri Satya Sai Baba is also situated here.
