Lower Longley is a small country area in Tasmania, Australia. It sits right on the edge of two local government areas: Kingborough and Huon Valley. The main road, the Huon Highway, runs through it. Most of the land here is made up of large properties.

In 2011, about 131 people lived in Lower Longley. Even though it's called 'Lower' Longley, it's actually higher up than the nearby town of Longley!

A Look Back: Lower Longley's History

Early Schools and Learning

A school called Lower Longley State School opened before the year 1900. People complained that the school's conditions were "disgraceful." Because of this, a newer school was built in 1941. This school later closed down.

Churches and Community Buildings

Lower Longley has had several churches over the years. A Wesleyan church opened in 1890. However, the last church in Lower Longley was destroyed by fires in 1967. After the fire, the church moved to Sandfly and became St. Lukes.

The town hall is an important community building in Lower Longley. The first town hall opened in 1907. The Premier of Tasmania, a very important leader, was there for the opening. This original building was also destroyed in the 1967 bushfires. A new town hall was built to replace it.

There is still an old Methodist cemetery from the early 1900s. It is "orphaned" because its church was lost in the same 1967 fires.

Fires and Rebuilding

Lower Longley has faced serious fires in its history. In 1898, most of the town was destroyed by a severe fire. Later, the 1967 bushfires also caused a lot of damage. These fires led to the rebuilding of important places like the town hall.

Modern Communications Hub

Today, Lower Longley is very important for communications in the Huon Valley. It is home to the transmission sites for two local radio stations: 87.8 Pulse FM Kingborough and Huon, and 98.5 Huon FM. These are located on a place called Mt Herringback.

Mt Herringback is the main communications hub for the entire Huon Valley. All phone calls, text messages, and internet data for major providers like Optus, Vodafone, Telstra, and NBN pass through Mt Herringback. This makes it a vital spot for connecting the community.
