Exploring Lowry Hill's Past
Lowry Hill gets its name from a hill. This hill was named after Thomas Lowry. He was a rich businessman in the late 1800s. He made money in real estate and with trolley cars.
How Lowry Hill Developed
In Minneapolis's early years, the hill was swampy. It was covered in a thick, old forest. By the mid-1800s, it became a small farming area. It offered great views of Minneapolis.
Architectural Styles of Lowry Hill Homes
Many houses in Lowry Hill were built before 1900. They often featured the Victorian style. Other styles also appeared, like Colonial and Mediterranean. You can also see English Tudor, Richardsonian Romanesque, Rambler, and Prairie styles. Most of these homes were built soon after the neighborhood became a popular place for Minneapolis's wealthiest citizens to live.
For over 100 years, the look of Lowry Hill has stayed mostly the same. However, some of the large homes built by the first owners have been changed. They are now condominiums, which are like apartments that people own.
