Loyall is a small city in Harlan County, Kentucky, in the United States. It is known as a "home rule-class city," which means it has the power to govern itself on local matters. In 2020, about 638 people lived there.
History of Loyall
Loyall started as a community around a Louisville and Nashville Railroad facility. This facility was built in 1920. It included a switching yard, where trains could change tracks, and a maintenance area for fixing trains.
The local post office opened in 1922. It was first called "Shonn." This name came from local slang for a "rail siding," which is a short track where trains can wait. In 1932, the name was changed to "Loyall." People are not sure if the city was named after a company official or another important person from the area.
Geography of Loyall
Loyall is located in the western part of Harlan County. It sits in the valley of the Cumberland River, which is a large river that starts nearby.
The city is about 3 miles (4.8 km) northwest of Harlan. Harlan is the main city and county seat of Harlan County. A major road, U.S. Route 119, goes around Loyall to the north. This road connects Loyall to other towns like Cumberland and Pineville.
According to the United States Census Bureau, Loyall covers a total area of about 0.33 square miles (0.84 square kilometers). Most of this area is land, with a small part being water. The city's size has grown a lot since 2000.
