Lubomyr Husar (born Liubomyr Huzar; February 26, 1933 – May 31, 2017) was a very important leader in the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church. This church is a special Eastern branch of the Catholic Church that is connected to the Pope.

He was known as the major archbishop, which is like the main leader, of the Ukrainian Catholic Church. He was also a Cardinal, a high-ranking official in the Catholic Church. From 2005, he was the Major Archbishop of Kiev-Galicia. He stepped down from his role in February 2011 because of health issues.

Cardinal Husar passed away on May 31, 2017, at the age of 84. He had been ill for a long time.

Early Life and Education

Lubomyr Husar was born in Lviv, which was part of Poland at the time. Today, Lviv is in Ukraine. He was born on February 26, 1933.

During World War II, his family had to leave Ukraine. They moved to Austria in 1944. Later, in 1949, they moved to the United States.

In the U.S., he studied at St. Basil College Seminary. He then went to Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. He earned a degree in philosophy there in 1954.

He continued his studies at Fordham University in New York. He received a master's degree in 1958.

Becoming a Church Leader

Lubomyr Husar became a priest on March 30, 1958. This happened in Stamford, Connecticut, in the United States. He then worked as a priest for the Ukrainian Catholic Church in the U.S.

In 1969, he went to Rome, Italy. He studied at the Pontifical Urban University. He earned a degree in theology in 1972.

After his studies, he joined a monastery in Italy. This was the Studite monastery of Grottaferrata. He became a monk there in 1972.

His Role as Major Archbishop

In 1977, Lubomyr Husar was secretly made a bishop. This was done by Josyf Slipyj, who was the head of the Ukrainian Catholic Church at the time.

He returned to Ukraine in 1990. Ukraine was gaining its independence from the Soviet Union. He helped rebuild the Ukrainian Catholic Church there.

In 2001, Pope John Paul II made him a Cardinal. This is a very high honor in the Catholic Church. It means he was a special advisor to the Pope.

In 2005, the main office of the Ukrainian Catholic Church moved from Lviv to Kyiv. This was a big change for the church. Cardinal Husar became the first Major Archbishop of Kiev-Galicia.

Later Years and Legacy

Cardinal Husar was a respected leader. He worked to strengthen the Ukrainian Catholic Church. He also promoted peace and understanding.

He stepped down from his role as Major Archbishop in 2011. This was due to his health. He continued to be an important figure in the church.

He passed away on May 31, 2017, in Kniazhychi, Ukraine. He was 84 years old. His life showed great dedication to his faith and his people.
