Lucas was the son of another famous artist, Juan de Valdés Leal, and Isabella Carasquilla. He was born in Seville. When he was just eleven years old, he showed his amazing skills. He created four detailed engravings for a book called Fiestas de Seville. These engravings celebrated the good qualities of a saint named San Fernando.

Later in his life, Lucas became a math teacher. He taught at the Marine College in Cádiz. But he never stopped creating art. He continued to paint and engrave until he passed away. He painted many pictures of saints and also made portraits of people. Some of his most famous works include portraits of Father Francisca Tamariz and a kind person named Manara. One very important painting he made showed the Spanish victory in the Battle of Lepanto. Lucas's son, Juan, also became an engraver, following in his father's footsteps.
