Becoming an Artist: Lucy Gunning's Education

Lucy Gunning was born in Newcastle upon Tyne, England. She started her art journey at the West Surrey College of Art and Design in 1984. After that, she studied sculpture at the Falmouth School of Art until 1987. She earned a special degree called a Bachelor of Arts.

During her time at Falmouth, Lucy won some important awards. These included the Granada Foundation Prize and the Falmouth School of Art Sculpture Award. She was also part of a group called Whitworth New Contemporaries, which highlights new artists. Later, she moved to London and continued her studies at Goldsmiths' College from 1992 to 1994. There, she earned her Master of Fine Arts degree.

Lucy Gunning's Creative Career and Artworks

Lucy Gunning began her professional art career in 1993. She created a video film called Climbing Around My Room. The next year, she made another film titled The Horse Impressionists. Both of these films were about seven and a half minutes long. They were very well-received by art critics.

Awards and Recognition for Her Art

In 1994, Lucy Gunning won the BT New Contemporaries Award, which came with a prize of £1,000. Two years later, she received the LAB Individual Artists Award. Her work continued to gain attention. In 2000, she got the LAB Visual Arts Fund. The next year, she won the DAAD award, which allowed her to be an artist-in-residence in Germany.

Lucy also spent six months at the British School at Rome in 2001. This was part of the Rome Scholarship program. These opportunities helped her explore new ideas and create more art.

Exploring New Ideas and Places

In 2003, Lucy Gunning was an artist-in-residence at Spike Island, Bristol for three months. During this time, she made two special films. One film, called Quarry, showed a working quarry and a stone explosion. The other film featured a geologist sharing their collection of crystals and rocks.

In 2004, she created a video installation called Esc. This artwork was shown on three different monitors. That same year, Lucy won the prestigious Paul Hamlyn Foundation Award for Visual Arts. She also spent time as an artist-in-residence in Canada at the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity.

In 2007, Lucy Gunning created a large project called The Archive, The Event and its Architecture. This work was inspired by her time as an artist-in-residence at the Wordsworth Trust. She also worked on a project called RePhil with the Philbrook Museum of Art.

Teaching and Research

From 2012 to 2014, Lucy Gunning was an artist-in-residence at the Kenneth Armitage Foundation. Today, she is a senior lecturer in fine art at the Chelsea College of Arts. She also won the Lorne Trust Scholarship in 2018–19.

Lucy Gunning researches interesting ideas about art and how things are shaped. She looks at how we think about "form" (the shape of something) versus "content" (what it's about). She also studies how being "formless" can affect people and places.
