Playing for Football Clubs
Luigi De Agostini started his professional football journey in his hometown, Udine, playing for Udinese. His first game was in March 1980. At first, he didn't play much, so he moved to a smaller club, Trento, for a year.
After that, he quickly returned to Italy's top league, Serie A, playing for Catanzaro. Then, he went back to Udinese, where he became a much more important player. In 1986, he joined Hellas Verona.
Time at Juventus
Luigi De Agostini achieved his biggest success when he signed with Juventus in 1987. He stayed there for five years. Even though he was a defender, he often played as a "box-to-box" midfielder. This meant he ran all over the field, helping both with defense and attack.
He even wore the famous number 10 shirt, which is usually given to attacking players, after Michel Platini retired. With Juventus, he won two important trophies in the 1989–90 season: the Coppa Italia (Italian Cup) and the UEFA Cup (a European competition). He scored a goal in the 1990 UEFA Cup Final when Juventus beat their rivals Fiorentina.
Later Club Career
After his successful time at Juventus, Luigi moved to Inter Milan for one year. Then, in 1993, he transferred to Reggiana, where he played for two seasons before ending his professional career. In total, he played 378 games in Serie A and scored 33 goals.
Playing for Italy
Luigi De Agostini played his first game for the Italian national team in May 1987. He played in Euro '88, where he scored a goal against Denmark. Italy reached the semi-finals in that tournament.
He also played for Italy in the 1988 Summer Olympics, where the team finished fourth. In the 1990 World Cup, which was held in Italy, he was part of the squad. Italy reached the semi-finals but lost to Argentina in a penalty shootout. De Agostini scored his penalty in that shootout. Italy then won the bronze medal by beating England in the third-place match.
His last game for Italy was in September 1991. In total, he played 36 games for Italy and scored 4 goals.
How He Played Football
Luigi De Agostini was known for being a very flexible and hard-working player. He could play in many defensive positions, especially on the left side of the field. He was good at covering the whole flank, helping his team both in defense and attack.
He started his career as a forward, but he became famous as an attacking left-back or wing-back. This was because he was fast, had great stamina, and was good at marking opponents and crossing the ball. He also understood the game well and had good technical skills.
De Agostini could also play anywhere in the midfield, including on the left wing or even in the center. He was known for his powerful shots from far away and was also good at taking free kicks and penalty kicks. With 33 goals in Serie A, he is one of the highest-scoring defenders in the league's history. He was also known for his professional attitude throughout his career.
After Retiring from Football
After he stopped playing, Luigi De Agostini worked as a team manager for his old club, Udinese, from 2007 to 2009. His job was to help connect the team's manager with the players.
Now, he focuses on training young Italian football players. He used to coach youth teams for big clubs like Udinese, Milan, Real Madrid, and Juventus. He ran their youth camps in Italy. Later, he started his own football school for young players in Friuli, called the De Agostini Academy.
Family Life
Luigi De Agostini's son, Michele, also became a professional footballer. He mainly played in the lower leagues of Italy.
