Early Life and Music Beginnings
Luke James was born in New Orleans, Louisiana. He was raised by his single mother, who introduced him to many kinds of music, including jazz and R&B. His love for music began after he saw a contestant on the TV show Showtime at the Apollo sing "A Song for You". James said the performance gave him chills and inspired him to become an entertainer.
As a kid, he was influenced by artists like Marvin Gaye and Willie Nelson. He went to St. Augustine High School, where one of his classmates was the future singer Frank Ocean. In high school, James was part of a music trio called Upskale.
After high school, the trio broke up, and James moved to Los Angeles. There, he and his former groupmate Q formed a new duo called Luke and Q. They even got to be the opening act for the R&B singer Tyrese Gibson. However, the duo didn't become famous, and they eventually went their separate ways.
