About Lunice: His Early Life and Music Journey
Lunice grew up in Montreal, Canada. His mother is from the Philippines, and his father is from Haiti.
From Dancing to Making Beats
Before he started making music, Lunice was a talented b-boy, which is a type of breakdancer. He even competed with a dance crew called the 701 Squad. In the early 2000s, he heard how the producer 9th Wonder made beats using a computer program called Fruity Loops. This inspired Lunice to try making his own music.
Starting His Music Career
In 2007, Lunice played his first show at an event called Bass Culture in Montreal. There, he met another artist named Sixtoo, who invited him to perform at popular parties called Megasoid. Since then, Lunice has been part of a music group called Turbo Crunk.
In 2010, Lunice took part in the Red Bull Music Academy in London. This is a special program where musicians learn and share ideas. He also performed at the Sonar Music Festival that same year, which is a big music event.
Working with Labels and Other Artists
Lunice signed with the record label LuckyMe. He released two EPs (which are like mini-albums) with them: Stacker Upper in 2010 and One Hunned in 2011.
He soon connected with the famous producer Diplo and his label, Mad Decent. This led to Lunice creating remixes for other artists and making mixes for shows like those on BBC Radio 1. He also performed at the Mad Decent Block Party events. In 2011, Lunice worked with the rapper Azealia Banks and appeared in her music video for the song "212."
Lunice has also worked with other well-known labels like XL Recordings and Warner Bros. Records. He traveled around the world, performing in many different countries in 2010 and 2011.
Forming TNGHT
In 2012, Lunice and Hudson Mohawke formed a music group called TNGHT. They released an EP together on the Warp and LuckyMe labels. The two artists first met in 2008 when Lunice invited Hudson Mohawke to perform at one of his Turbo Crunk parties.
Solo Albums and Recent Work
In 2017, Lunice released his first full solo album, called CCCLX. That same year, he also released an EP called Moving Parts with another producer named The Alchemist. His most recent solo album, Open, was released in 2023.
