María Guadalupe "Lupita" Jones Garay (born September 6, 1967) is a famous Mexican producer, actress, and model. She made history by winning the Miss Universe 1991 title. She was the first person from Mexico to win a major international beauty pageant.

Early Life and Education

Lupita Jones was born in Mexicali, Baja California, Mexico. Before she became Miss Universe, she studied business. She earned a degree in business administration. She also did advanced studies in industrial administration. She completed her education at the Centro de Enseñanza Técnica y Superior in Mexicali.

Becoming a Beauty Queen

In September 1990, Lupita Jones won a big national contest. She represented the state of Baja California. This win made her the new Señorita México.

Miss Universe

On May 17, 1991, Lupita Jones competed for the Miss Universe 1991 title. The event took place in Las Vegas, Nevada. She competed against 72 other contestants from around the world. Lupita represented Mexico in the competition.

She performed very well and reached the semifinals. In fact, she was in first place during the preliminary rounds. During the final part of the competition, Lupita won every single round. This included the swimsuit, interview, and evening gown sections. She answered the judges' questions very well. Lupita Jones won the crown and the Miss Universe title for her country.

Working in Television

After her time as Miss Universe ended in 1992, Lupita started a new company. In 1994, she created Promocertamen with Televisa. This company's main job was to produce Nuestra Belleza México. This is Mexico's official beauty pageant. It chooses who will represent Mexico in contests like Miss Universe, Miss World, and Miss International.

In 1997, she tried to start a beauty contest for men. It was called El Modelo México. However, it did not get much attention from the public.

Lupita Jones helped Mexico win more international titles. In 2007, Priscila Perales won Miss International 2007. In 2009, Anagabriela Espinoza won Miss International 2009. Then, in 2010, Ximena Navarrete became Miss Universe 2010. Lupita had promised to step down from Nuestra Belleza México if a Mexican woman won Miss Universe again. However, she continued in her role after Ximena's win.

From 2008 to 2014, Lupita Jones was a judge on Nuestra Belleza Latina. This was a reality TV show on Univision. It looked for young women of Latin American descent in the United States.

In 2015, there were some negative comments about Mexicans from Donald Trump. He was part-owner of the Miss Universe organization at the time. As the head of Nuestra Belleza México, Lupita Jones decided to take action. She supported Mexico's contestant withdrawing from the 2015 pageant. She felt she was not given a chance to show she could work in politics.
