María de Guadalupe "Lupita" Jones Garay (born September 6, 1967) is a famous Mexican actress, model, and producer. She is best known for winning the Miss Universe 1991 beauty pageant. She was the first woman from Mexico to win this big international title. Since her win, two more Mexican women have also become Miss Universe.
After her reign, Lupita Jones became the national director of the Mexicana Universal pageant in Mexico in 1994. This pageant helps choose Mexico's representatives for Miss Universe. She has helped two more Mexican women, Ximena Navarrete and Andrea Meza, win the Miss Universe crown.
In 2021, Lupita Jones also ran for the position of Governor of Baja California in Mexico.

Education and Learning
Before she became Miss Universe, Lupita Jones earned a degree in business administration. She also continued her studies in industrial administration. She studied at the Centro de Enseñanza Técnica y Superior in her hometown of Mexicali, Baja California.

Winning Señorita Mexico
In September 1990, Lupita Jones won the title of Señorita México. She represented her home state of Baja California in this national competition.
Becoming Miss Universe
On May 17, 1991, Lupita Jones competed for the Miss Universe 1991 title. The event took place in Las Vegas, Nevada. She was one of 72 contestants from around the world.
Lupita performed very well in the preliminary rounds. She entered the semifinals in first place. During the final competition, she won every part. This included the swimsuit, interview, and evening gown rounds. She then answered the judges' questions and the final questions perfectly. Lupita Jones won the crown and the Miss Universe title for Mexico.
TV Producer and Pageant Director
After her time as Miss Universe ended in 1992, Lupita Jones started a new career. In 1994, she created a company called Promocertamen with Televisa. This company produces Nuestra Belleza México. This is Mexico's official pageant. It chooses the women who will represent Mexico in Miss Universe, Miss World, and Miss International.
In 2001, Lupita Jones launched a campaign called Report Her. This campaign asked the public to suggest beautiful women in their state for the Nuestra Belleza México show. Some people criticized the campaign.
Lupita Jones has helped Mexican women win other big beauty pageants. Priscila Perales won Miss International 2007. Anagabriela Espinoza won Miss International 2009. In 2010, Ximena Navarrete became Miss Universe 2010.
From 2008 to 2014, Lupita Jones was a judge on Nuestra Belleza Latina. This was a reality TV show on Univision. It looked for young women of Latin American descent in the United States.
In 2015, Donald Trump, who partly owned the Miss Universe organization, made some negative comments about Mexicans. As the head of Nuestra Belleza México, Lupita Jones decided to take action. She supported Mexico's contestant withdrawing from the 2015 pageant. She also encouraged a boycott of products connected to the pageant.
Helping Others
Lupita Jones has also worked to help people.
In 1999, she decided that the beauty contest would support a program. This program helped girls in Mexico who were not treated well. It was part of the Integral Family Development project.
In 2000, Lupita Jones became a UNFPA Goodwill Ambassador. This means she helped promote important causes for the United Nations. She was a spokesperson for the Face to Face Campaign in Mexico.
Political Career
In 2021, Lupita Jones decided to enter politics. She ran as a candidate for governor of Baja California. She was part of the Va por México alliance. She came in third place in the election.
After the election, Jones said that people saw her only as a beauty queen. She felt she was not given a chance to show her abilities in other areas.
