Luzula crinita is a type of flowering plant. It belongs to the rush family. This plant grows naturally on the subantarctic islands. These islands are near New Zealand and Australia. Its scientific name, crinita, means "hairy tufted" in Latin. This name describes its leaves, which have many hairs.

What Does It Look Like?

Luzula crinita is a perennial herb. This means it's a plant that lives for more than two years. It grows in stiff, dark green clumps. These clumps can be from 40 to 450 millimeters tall.

Its leaves have edges that curve inward. They also have long hairs along their sides. The plant's flowers grow in a special cluster called an inflorescence. This is usually a single, round, brownish-black head. It has many tiny flowers, called florets, packed closely together. There's also a small, hairy leaf-like part called a bracteole near the flowers.

The individual flowers are small, about 2 to 2.5 millimeters long. Each flower has six stamens, which are the parts that produce pollen. The flower parts that look like petals, called tepals, are dark brown. After flowering, the plant produces a dark brown seed capsule.

Where Does It Live?

This plant is found on several islands. These include New Zealand's Antipodes, Auckland, and Campbell Islands. It also grows on Australia's Macquarie Island.

Luzula crinita likes to grow in certain places. You can find it in Agrostis grasslands. It also grows in fellfield, which is a type of rocky, open land. Sometimes, it grows along the edges of marshes. It can live from sea level up to 370 meters high. This plant flowers during the warmer months, from October to January.
