Lyca's Early Life and Family
Lyca Gairanod was born on November 21, 2004, in Tanza, Cavite, Philippines. Her family worked hard to earn money. Her father was a fisherman, and her mother, Maria Nessel Gairanod, collected plastic and old newspapers to sell.
Lyca often helped her mother. She would also sing for her neighbors. In return, they would sometimes give her money or food. Lyca shared that she chose to help her family and earn an allowance, rather than being forced to.
Lyca's Journey on The Voice Kids
Lyca Gairanod became a household name when she joined The Voice Kids season one. This show was aired by ABS-CBN.
The Blind Audition
On May 8, 2014, Lyca's blind audition aired. She sang "Halik" by Aegis. Coach Sarah Geronimo was so impressed that she pressed her button, turning her chair around. Coach Lea Salonga almost pressed her button too, but she felt that Lyca and Sarah were "meant to be" together.
The Battle Rounds
Lyca moved on to the "battles" round. On July 12, 2014, she competed against Isaac Zamudio and Lee Marcelino. They sang "Isang Lahi" by Regine Velasquez. Lyca won this round and advanced to the next stage, the "sing-offs."
The Sing-Offs
After the battles, came the sing-offs. In this round, artists chose their own songs. Coaches then picked two artists from their team to move on to the "live shows." Lyca sang the Tagalog version of Luther Vandross' "Dance with My Father." Coach Sarah Geronimo chose Lyca as one of her team's representatives, sending her to the semi-finals.
The Semi-Finals
Lyca performed "Pangarap na Bituin" by her mentor, Sarah Geronimo, during the live semi-finals. This was on July 19, 2014, at the Newport Performing Arts Theater in Resorts World Manila, Pasay. She received the most votes from the public, which meant she moved on to the finals!
The Grand Finals
The grand finals had a special voting system. Votes were counted from three different rounds: a power ballad, an upbeat song, and a duet with a celebrity. The person with the most votes after all three rounds would be the winner.
The top four artists, including Lyca, opened the first episode of the finals. They sang a mix of songs like "Bitiw," "Superhero," and "Sugod."
For her first song in the finals, Lyca sang "Narito Ako" by Regine Velasquez. In the second round, she performed "Call Me Maybe" by Carly Rae Jepsen. For the third and final round, she sang "Basang-basa sa Ulan" by Aegis. At the end of the competition, Lyca Gairanod was announced as the first-ever winner of The Voice Kids Philippines!
