Early Life and Education
Lyle Mitchell Corbine Jr. was born in La Crosse, Wisconsin. He is officially a member of the Bad River Band of the Lake Superior Tribe of Chippewa Indians. His dad, Mitch Corbine, was a manager at a casino. His mom, Carole Livingston, was a psychologist for the Indian Health Service.
Lyle grew up in different small towns and Indian reservations in Minnesota and Wisconsin. He later went to the University of Minnesota. There, he studied interesting subjects like English and Philosophy.
Filmmaking Career
Lyle Corbine Jr. started making movies with very little money. He made fourteen films before two of his short movies were chosen for big film festivals. These included the Sundance Film Festival and the Toronto International Film Festival.
In 2019, Filmmaker magazine named him one of the "25 New Faces of Indie Film." This means he was seen as one of the most promising new independent filmmakers.
Later, he worked with the Sundance Institute Feature Film Program. They helped him make his first full-length movie, Wild Indian. This film is about two Ojibwe men, played by Michael Greyeyes and Chaske Spencer. They try to deal with difficult events from their past.
Variety magazine also recognized Corbine as one of the "10 Directors to Watch" for his work on Wild Indian. The movie was nominated for four Independent Spirit Awards. Lyle himself was nominated for Best First Feature and Best First Screenplay. The movie was released in North America by Vertical Entertainment.
