Mary Lynn Carlin (born January 31, 1938) is an American actress who is now retired. She became famous for her very first movie role in the 1968 film Faces. For this role, she was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. This was special because she was the first person who wasn't a professional actor to get an Oscar nomination.
Later, she was also nominated for a BAFTA Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role for her acting in the movie Taking Off (1971).

About Lynn Carlin's Life and Career
Lynn Carlin was born in Los Angeles, California. Her mother, Muriel Elizabeth, was a socialite, and her father, Laurence Kramer, managed businesses in Hollywood. Her mother also worked in radio. Lynn grew up in a beautiful coastal town called Laguna Beach.
Lynn Carlin started her acting journey on stage. Her first play was The Women at the Laguna Beach Playhouse.

In 1968, Lynn Carlin got her first big movie role. She played Maria, the wife of a character played by John Marley, in the film Faces. This movie was directed by John Cassavetes. Even though it was her first movie, she was nominated for an Academy Award. This was a big deal because she wasn't a trained professional actor.
After Faces, Lynn Carlin often played roles as wives and mothers in movies and TV shows. She continued acting until she retired in 1987.

In 1970, Lynn Carlin appeared in the movie ...tick...tick...tick.... She played the ambitious wife of George Kennedy's character. The next year, in 1971, she was in Miloš Forman's movie Taking Off. In this film, she played Buck Henry's wife, who was looking for her missing daughter in New York City. That same year, she also acted in the western movie Wild Rovers.
In 1972, she worked with John Marley again in the horror film Deathdream, where she played his wife once more. Other movies she appeared in include the British drama Baxter! (1973), the comedy French Postcards (1979), and the horror film Superstition (1982).
Lynn Carlin is also well-known for her TV roles. She played the mother of a teenager named Lance Kerwin in the TV movie James at 15 (1977) and its follow-up series James at 16. In 1977, she joined the cast of The Waltons for several episodes, playing a nurse who marries the county sheriff. She also appeared in the 1976 TV series Rich Man, Poor Man Book II. She had a regular role in the TV series Strike Force from 1981 to 1982.
She was in several other TV movies, like Silent Night, Lonely Night. In 1972, she was in an episode of Gunsmoke called "Milligan," playing the wife of Harry Morgan's character.
In 1971, she played the mother of a teenage father, Desi Arnaz Jr., in Mr. and Mrs. Bo Jo Jones. That same year, she played Peter Falk's wife in A Step Out of Line. In 1974, she appeared in Terror on the 40th Floor and The Morning After. She played the wife of Sam Houston in the movie about his life, The Honorable Sam Houston, in 1975. The next year, she played Eve Plumb's mother in Dawn: Portrait of a Teenage Runaway.
Her last TV movie was A Killer in the Family (1983). In this film, she played the mother of three young men who were tricked into helping their father, played by Robert Mitchum, escape from jail. Her very last acting role was a guest appearance on the TV show Murder, She Wrote in 1987. She played the wife of a character who was murdered in that episode.
Lynn Carlin's Family Life
Lynn Carlin was married three times. Her first marriage was to Peter Hall from 1958 to 1960. They later divorced. Her second marriage was to Edward Carlin, and they had two children together. This marriage lasted from 1963 to 1974 and also ended in divorce. Her oldest child is Dan Carlin, who is now a well-known podcaster and journalist. Lynn Carlin's third marriage was to John Wolfe, from 1983 until he passed away in 1999.
