Lyon County facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Lyon County is a name shared by five different areas, called counties, in the United States. When you hear "Lyon County," it's important to know which one people are talking about, because they are all in different states!

A county is like a smaller division of a state, similar to how a city is a smaller part of a county. Counties help organize local government services, like schools, roads, and law enforcement. Each county has a main town or city called a "county seat," where the county government offices are located.

The Five Lyon Counties

Four of the five Lyon Counties are named after General Nathaniel Lyon, a brave soldier who fought during the American Civil War. The fifth one, in Kentucky, is named after a different important person.

Lyon County, Iowa

Lyon County in Iowa is located in the very northwest corner of the state. It was created in 1851 and is known for its rich farmland. The county seat, which is the main town, is Rock Rapids. Many people in Lyon County, Iowa, work in agriculture, growing crops like corn and soybeans, and raising livestock.

Lyon County, Kansas

You can find Lyon County in the east-central part of Kansas. It was established in 1857. The county seat here is Emporia, which is home to Emporia State University. Lyon County, Kentucky

Lyon County in Kentucky is located in the western part of the state. It was formed in 1854 and is unique because it's named after Chittenden Lyon, a politician who served in the Kentucky state legislature. This county is famous for its beautiful lakes, Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley, which are popular spots for fishing, boating, and camping. A large part of the Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area is also in Lyon County, making it a great place for outdoor adventures. The county seat is Eddyville.

Lyon County, Minnesota

In the southwest region of Minnesota, you'll find Lyon County, which was created in 1868. Its county seat is Marshall. The county's economy relies on farming, but also includes manufacturing and services.
