Local Communities

Within Lyon Township itself, there are two smaller communities that don't have their own separate governments. They are:

  • New Hudson: This community is found where Grand River Avenue, Pontiac Trail, and S. Milford Road meet. It has a long history! In 1830, two men from New York, Russell Alvord and Daniel Richards, bought land here. In 1831, they opened an inn called the "Old Tavern," which is still around today as the New Hudson Inn. This inn was an important stop for stagecoaches. A post office was set up here in 1834.
  • Kensington: This used to be a small village. Now, it's part of a large park called Kensington Metropark.
