Mölndal Municipality (which in Swedish is Mölndals kommun or Mölndals stad) is a local government area, like a county or district, in western Sweden. It's located just south of the big city of Gothenburg. The main town and center of the municipality is Mölndal. This whole area is part of a larger region called Metropolitan Gothenburg.

How Mölndal Municipality Was Formed
Mölndal has an interesting history of how it became the municipality it is today.
Early Beginnings in Fässberg
Back in 1911, a special area called Mölndal was created. It was like a small town area within a larger rural municipality known as Fässberg. This meant Mölndal handled its own town-like matters.
Becoming the City of Mölndal
Then, in 1922, Fässberg officially became the City of Mölndal. This was an important step in its development.
Joining with Other Areas
In 1971, Mölndal joined together with two other areas: Kållered and Lindome. Lindome actually moved from a different county, Halland County, to join Mölndal. At the same time, Mölndal became a "unitary municipality," which is the standard type of local government area across Sweden.
Calling Itself a "City"
Even though it's officially a municipality, Mölndal often likes to call itself Mölndals stad, which means City of Mölndal. This is more of a traditional or unofficial name and doesn't change its official status as a municipality.
