Life and Career
How It All Began
Mỹ Tâm was born in Da Nang, Vietnam. When she was six, she started taking ballet classes. Later, she learned to play the guitar and organ. She loved to sing but didn't think it would become her job.
She won first place in her school's singing contest and a gold medal in a city-wide competition. Although she was accepted into a military art school in Hanoi, she decided to study vocal training at the Ho Chi Minh City Conservatory to be closer to her family.
Starting Her Music Journey
In 1999, Mỹ Tâm signed with a record company called Vafaco. She co-wrote her first soft, romantic song, "Mãi yêu" (Love, Always).
After her contract ended in 2000, she changed her look with a short, yellow-brown hairstyle inspired by Korean pop stars. That year, she competed in the Asia New Singer Competition in Shanghai, China, and won a bronze medal. She said this was a turning point that helped her decide to become a professional singer. She graduated from the conservatory in 2001 as a top student.
Becoming a Star
In 2001, Mỹ Tâm released her first album, Mãi Yêu (Love, Always). A dance song from the album, "Toc Nau Moi Tram" (Brown Hair, Dark Lips), became a huge hit and even started a trend of people dyeing their hair brown. The album sold 54,000 copies.
Her song "Cây Đàn Sinh Viên" (The Guitar of Students) became very popular among university students. It was a song about the warm and romantic life of students.
In 2002, she released her second album, Đâu Chỉ Riêng Em (Not Only Me). It had more upbeat dance-pop songs. One of the biggest hits from this album was "Giấc mơ tình yêu" (Love Dream).
The Queen of V-Pop
Mỹ Tâm's third album, Yesterday & Now, came out in 2003. It included two of her biggest hits ever: "Ước gì" (I Wish) and "Họa Mi Tóc Nâu" (Brown-Haired Nightingale). "Ước gì" became one of her signature songs that she performs at almost every concert. The album sold over 100,000 copies, making it the highest-selling album in Vietnamese music history at the time.
In 2004, she held a huge concert called "Ngày Ấy & Bây Giờ" (Yesterday and Now) in two large stadiums. It was the most expensive concert in Vietnam at that time, and she became the first Vietnamese artist to sell out a stadium. This success earned her the titles "Number one pop star in Vietnam" and "Queen of V-Pop."
Later that year, she was the first Vietnamese singer to perform at the Asia Song Festival in Seoul, Korea, where she received an award from the Korean Minister of Culture and Tourism.
Trying New Styles
In 2006, Mỹ Tâm went to Korea to work on her fifth album, Fly. She wanted to try new recording techniques and explore different music styles like R&B, hip-hop, and soul.
In 2008, she started her own company, MT Entertainment. She released two more albums that year: Trở Lại (Come Back), which was a return to her pop ballad style, and Nhịp Đập (To the Beat), which was full of energetic dance songs. She won "Singer of the Year" at the Devotion Awards in 2008.
TV and Film Career
In 2010, Mỹ Tâm became a judge on the TV singing competition Sao Mai Điểm Hẹn. People liked her for being honest and giving helpful advice to the contestants.
She also starred in a musical TV drama called Cho Một Tình Yêu (For a Love). She was the musical director for the show and wrote some of the songs.
From 2012 to 2014, she was a judge on Vietnam Idol. In 2015, she was a coach on The Voice of Vietnam, and her contestant, Đức Phúc, won the competition.
Recent Successes
Mỹ Tâm released her ninth album, Tâm 9, in 2017. It was a huge success, selling 5,000 copies in the first hour. In 2018, the album reached No. 10 on the Billboard World Albums Chart, making her the first Vietnamese singer to appear in the top 10.
In October 2018, she held a concert called "First Love" at a large arena in Seoul, South Korea. She was the first singer from Southeast Asia to have a concert at that venue.
Charity Work
In 2008, Mỹ Tâm started the MT Foundation, a charity organization. One of its main projects is "Nâng bước ngày mai" (Sustain the Steps of Tomorrow). This project helps poor families by building houses and giving scholarships to students who need them. The foundation does charity work every year to help people in remote areas of Vietnam.
Music and Voice
Mỹ Tâm is known for her powerful and clear mezzo-soprano voice, which has a range of three octaves. This allows her to sing many different styles of music, from pop and dance to rock.
She is also praised for her amazing live performances. She can sing 20 to 30 songs during a concert while performing difficult dance moves, all without losing her strong and passionate voice.
