Phan Thị Mỹ Tâm (born on January 16, 1981, in Da Nang), known as Mỹ Tâm, is a famous Vietnamese singer and songwriter. She has been one of Vietnam's most successful singers for over two decades. She was even named "Super Icon of the Year" at the Elle Style Awards in 2019.

Life and Music Career

Early Life and First Steps

Mỹ Tâm was born in Da Nang, Vietnam, in 1981. When she was six, she started learning ballet for three years. After that, she tried playing the guitar and organ. She loved to sing, but she didn't think it would be her job.

She won first place in her high school's singing contest. She also won a top award at a city-wide singing competition. She was chosen to study at the Military School of Art in Hanoi. However, because of her family, she went to the Ho Chi Minh City Conservatory to study singing.

Starting Her Career (1999–2000)

In 1999, Mỹ Tâm signed with Vafaco Record. She joined many singing groups and won several awards in singing contests. Her first demo song was "Nhé anh" (Please, Dear). She also helped write a song called "Mãi yêu" (Endless Love).

After her contract ended in 2000, she changed her look with short, yellow-brown hair. In 2000, she worked at the Music Center in Ho Chi Minh City. She entered the Asia New Singer Competition in Shanghai, China, and won a bronze medal. She felt this award was very important for her singing career. She graduated in 2001 as a top student.

First Big Hits (2001–2002)

In 2001, Mỹ Tâm released her first album, Mãi Yêu (Endless Love). Her song "Toc Nau Moi Tram" (Brown Hair, Dark Lips) was a big dance hit. It even made people want to dye their hair! The album also showed her talent as a songwriter. Other songs like "My Love Candle" and "Yêu Dại Khờ" (Foolish Love) became popular in karaoke places.

"Hai mươi" (20) was a song about her twentieth birthday. It became a popular song for university women. Her album Endless Love sold 54,000 copies.

Her song "Cây Đàn Sinh Viên" (The Guitar of Students) became a classic for university students in the early 2000s. It was often used in media to show student life. This song was also the reason for her 2004 tour around universities.

In 2002, she released her first video single, "Hát với Dòng Sông" (Singing with the River). This song was popular, even though some people found its lyrics hard to understand. Another song, "Quê Hương Tuổi Thơ Tôi" (Hometown - My Childhood), became a classic later on.

Mỹ Tâm released her second album, Đâu Chỉ Riêng Em (Not Only Me), in May 2002. This album had more dance-pop songs than her first. "Giấc mơ tình yêu" (Love Dream) was a huge hit on radio and TV.

Becoming the "Queen of V-Pop" (2003–2005)

In 2003, Mỹ Tâm released her third album, Yesterday & Now. It had two of her biggest songs: "Ước gì" (I Wish) and "Họa Mi Tóc Nâu" (Brown-Haired Nightingale). "Ước gì" became one of her signature songs. The album sold over 60,000 copies quickly and was liked by fans and critics.

Other popular songs from the album included "Mùa hè thương yêu" (Summer of Love) and "Niềm tin chiến thắng" (Belief of Victory). "Mùa hè thương yêu" was about missing friends before summer break, which many teenagers loved. "Niềm tin chiến thắng" was a powerful song that became an anthem for the Vietnamese team in the SEA Games.

In 2004, Mỹ Tâm held a concert called "Ngày Ấy & Bây Giờ" (Yesterday and Now) in two big stadiums in Vietnam. These concerts cost about 3 billion đồng (around $250,000 in 2003), which was a lot of money for a concert back then. But she was the first Vietnamese artist to sell out stadiums! Her album also sold over 100,000 copies, making it the best-selling album in Vietnamese history. She became known as the "Number one pop star in Vietnam" and the "Queen of V-Pop."

On November 16, 2004, she became the first Vietnamese singer to perform at the Asia Song Festival in Seoul, Korea. She sang "Ước gì" and "Nụ hôn bất ngờ" and received an award from the Korean Minister of Culture.

In 2005, she released her fourth album, Hoàng Hôn Thức Giấc (The Color of My Life). She wrote many of the songs herself, like "Surprising Kiss" and "Vì đâu" (How Come?). This album was praised for being well-made and showing her creative control.

New Sounds and Her Own Company (2006–2008)

In 2006, Mỹ Tâm worked with a Korean record company for her fifth album, Fly. She wanted to try new music styles like R&B, hip-hop, and soul, instead of just pop and ballads. Fly was released in December 2006. She also released a single with four songs re-recorded in Korean. In 2007, she launched her own perfume brand called "My Time."

In 2008, Mỹ Tâm started her own company, Mỹ Tâm Entertainment (MT Entertainment). This was part of her "Thời Gian và Tôi" (The Time and Myself) project. She released her sixth album, Trở Lại (Come Back), on April 17. This album brought her back to pop ballads but with a new, international feel.

On September 1, she released her seventh album, Nhịp Đập (To the Beat), also produced in Korea. She said the songs had upbeat rhythms that "make you want to move." She promoted these albums with a concert tour called "Sóng Đa Tần" (To The Beat). She won "Singer of the Year 2008" at the Devotion Award.

TV, Movies, and Global Recognition (2009-2011)

In April 2010, Mỹ Tâm released her album Những Giai Điệu Của Thời Gian (Melodies of Time). In August, ABC News (America) listed her among 12 "ABC's Global Pop Sensations You've Never Heard Of."

She became a judge on the TV singing competition Sao Mai Điểm Hẹn. People liked her honest feedback and good fashion sense.

She also starred in the musical television drama Cho Một Tình Yêu (For a Love). She was also the musical director for the show, writing some original songs. The show was very popular with her fans.

Idol Judge and New Albums (2012–2015)

In May 2012, Mỹ Tâm performed at the MTV EXIT concert. She became MTV EXIT's representative in Vietnam. On May 29, 2012, she became a judge for the fourth season of Vietnam Idol. She was praised for supporting contestants, including a transgender woman named Huong Giang.

From 2013 to 2014, Mỹ Tâm worked on her eighth album, Tâm (self-titled). It was released on March 24, 2013, with 10 original songs she helped compose. The album was a big success, selling 5,000 copies on its first day and reaching number one on iTunes.

In August 2013, Mỹ Tâm held an acoustic music show called "Send to My Love." She brought the show to Hanoi and then a charity event in Da Nang. She returned as a judge for the fifth season in September 2013. Mỹ Tâm was the first Vietnamese artist to be nominated for the "Best Worldwide Act" at the 2013 MTV Europe Music Awards. She won the "Outstanding Southeast Asian Artist" trophy.

In September 2014, Mỹ Tâm announced her "Heartbeat" concert tour, which had free tickets. The concerts attracted about 40,000 people in Ho Chi Minh City and 25,000 in Hanoi. The tour was very popular and earned her a nomination for "Tour of the Year." A DVD of the "Heartbeat" concert sold 3,600 copies in just four hours!

In April 2015, Mỹ Tâm became a coach on the third season of The Voice of Vietnam. Her contestant, Đức Phúc, won the competition, making her the winning coach on her first try. She won "Artist of the Year" at the VTV Award for the second time in a row.

Recent Success: Tâm 9 and "First Love" (2016-Present)

From 2016 to 2017, Mỹ Tâm focused on her ninth album, Tâm 9. It was released on December 3, 2017. On its first day, 5,000 copies of Tâm 9 sold out in just one hour! It became the "best selling album in Vietnam," with over 20,000 CDs sold. In January 2018, Tâm 9 reached No. 10 on the Billboard World Albums Chart, making her the first Vietnamese singer to achieve this. It was also a best-selling album on iTunes and Amazon. In March 2018, she won "Singer of the Year" and "Album of the Year" (for Tâm 9) at the Devotion Music Awards.

On October 20, 2018, Mỹ Tâm held her "My Tam, First Love" concert at the Jangchung Gymnasium in Seoul, South Korea. This was a big moment in her career because holding a concert in another country is a huge achievement. About 4,000 people attended. She became the first Southeast Asian singer to hold a concert at the Jangchung Gymnasium.

Charity Work

On April 4, 2008, Mỹ Tâm started the My Tam (MT) Foundation. This charity gets money from her company, her fans, and others. One of its main projects is "Nâng bước ngày mai" ("Sustain the Steps of Tomorrow"). This project helps build houses for poor people and gives scholarships to students who need help. The MT Foundation does a lot of charity work every year for people in remote areas of Vietnam.
