Early Life and Education
Madabhushi Ananthasayanam Ayyangar was born in a village called Thiruchanoor. This village is near Tirupati in what was then the Madras Presidency. This area was part of British India at the time.
He went to Devasthanam High School in Tirupati for his early studies. Later, he attended Pachiappa's College in Chennai. He then studied law and earned his law degree in 1913 from Madras Law College.
Early Career and Freedom Fight
After finishing his education, Ayyangar worked as a mathematics teacher. He then became a lawyer, helping people with legal matters from 1915 to 1950.
He was greatly inspired by Mahatma Gandhi, who led India's fight for freedom. Ayyangar actively joined the Indian Freedom Struggle. Because of his involvement in the movement, he was arrested and put in jail two times.
Political Journey in Independent India
Ayyangar's political career began even before India's independence. He was elected as a member of the Central Legislative Assembly in 1934. This was an important step in his journey as a public servant.
After India became independent, he continued to serve the country. He was elected to the first Lok Sabha in 1952 from the Tirupathi area. The Lok Sabha is where elected representatives from all over India meet to make laws. In 1956, he was elected again to the second Lok Sabha from the Chittoor area.
Serving as Deputy Speaker
In 1952, Ayyangar was chosen as the first Deputy Speaker of the Lok Sabha. He worked alongside Ganesh Vasudev Mavalankar, who was the Speaker at that time. The Deputy Speaker helps the Speaker manage the Lok Sabha's meetings and takes over if the Speaker is not available.
Becoming Speaker of the Lok Sabha
When Speaker Mavalankar passed away in 1956, Ayyangar was elected to become the new Speaker of the Lok Sabha. As Speaker, he was in charge of all the discussions and debates in the Lok Sabha. He made sure that rules were followed and that everyone had a chance to speak.
During his time as Speaker, an important law was passed. This was the Dowry Prohibition Act of 1961. This law made it illegal to give or take dowry, which is money or gifts given at a wedding. This law was passed during a special joint meeting of both houses of Parliament, with Ayyangar leading the session.
Governor of Bihar
After his time as Speaker, Ayyangar took on another important role. He served as the Governor of Bihar from 1962 to 1967. The Governor is like the head of a state, representing the President of India.
Later Life and Legacy
After his term as Governor ended in 1967, Ayyangar decided to retire from politics. He moved back to his hometown of Tirupati.
To honor his contributions to India, a life-size bronze statue of him was built in Tirupati in 2007. This statue stands as a reminder of his important work and dedication to the country.
