Mayankodu Kelath Narayanan (born on March 10, 1934) is an important figure who served India in many ways. He was a highly respected officer in the Indian Police Service.

He held a very important job as the National Security Advisor of India from 2005 to 2010. After that, he became the 19th Governor of West Bengal, serving from 2010 to 2014. For his excellent service to the country, the Government of India honored him with the Padma Shri award in 1992.

Early Life and Education

M. K. Narayanan comes from the Kelath family in Ottapalam, a town in the Kerala state of India.

He went to school at Madras Christian College Higher Secondary School. Later, he completed his college studies at Loyola College, Chennai. He is married to Padmini Narayanan, and they have a son named Vijay and a daughter named Meena.

A Career in Public Service

M. K. Narayanan joined the Indian Police Service in 1955. He did very well in his training, graduating with the highest marks. After working briefly as a police officer in the state of Madras, he joined the Intelligence Bureau in 1959.

He spent most of his career working for the Government of India. His main focus was on issues related to the country's internal and national security.

He led the Intelligence Bureau (IB) as its chief from 1987 to 1990. This is a very high-ranking position, similar to an Army general. After that, he headed the Joint Intelligence Committee for a year. He became the Chief of the IB again in 1991 before he retired in 1992.

After retiring, he was appointed as a Special Adviser for Internal Security to the Prime Minister of India in May 2004.

From 2005 to 2010, he served as India's National Security Advisor. This role is very important for protecting the country. During a challenging time for India in 2008, he was the National Security Advisor. He played a key role in important international agreements, such as the Indo-US Civil Nuclear Agreement.

Later, he became the Governor of West Bengal. This is a significant position in an Indian state. He took over from Gopalkrishna Gandhi.
