Devanand Konwar (1934 – 25 April 2020) was an important political leader from Assam, India. He served as the Governor of three different Indian states: Tripura, Bihar, and West Bengal. A Governor is like the chief representative of a state, appointed by the President of India. Konwar was a dedicated member of the Indian National Congress party throughout his life.

Devanand Konwar's Journey
Devanand Konwar started his career as a teacher. He taught English at Cotton College in Guwahati. After that, he worked for an American company called Standard Vacuum Oil Company in Mumbai. He was a marketing manager there for seven years. His job was to help distribute petroleum products across Northern and Eastern India.
From Business to Law
In 1968, Konwar helped start a college in Guwahati City. It was called Guwahati College, and he was its first Principal. Later, in 1969, he became a lawyer. He practiced law at the Gauhati High Court and also in the Supreme Court of India. He worked as a government lawyer for the states of Assam, Tripura, Arunachal Pradesh, and Mizoram.
Joining Politics
Konwar joined the Indian National Congress Party in 1955 when he was a student leader. He remained a part of the party until he passed away. He held many important positions within the party at both district and state levels. These roles included being a General Secretary and Vice-President of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee from 1983 to 1991.
In 1988, he led a group of 28 people on a trip to the Soviet Union. This group included people from Assam, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu. They visited cities like Moscow, Tashkent, and Kiev.
Serving as a Governor
Devanand Konwar became the Governor of Bihar in 2009. While he was the Governor of Bihar, he also took on an extra role. He served as the Governor of West Bengal for a short time. He held this additional charge from December 2009 to January 2010. After that, M. K. Narayanan became the new Governor of West Bengal.
Later, Konwar served as the Governor of Tripura from 2013 to 2014.
Cabinet Minister Roles
Besides being a Governor, Konwar also served as a Cabinet Minister in the state government of Assam. He was a minister in 1991 under Chief Minister Hiteswar Saikia. He also served as a minister again in 2001 under Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi.
