Tarun Gogoi (born April 1, 1936 – died November 23, 2020) was an important Indian politician. He served as the Chief Minister of Assam for a long time, from 2001 to 2016. He was a member of the Indian National Congress political party.
Gogoi led his party to win three elections in a row. This made him the longest-serving chief minister of Assam. During his time as chief minister, he helped stop violence and improve the state's money situation. He was also a Member of Parliament six times. After he passed away, he received the Padma Bhushan award in 2021. This is one of India's highest civilian honors.

Early Life and Education
Tarun Gogoi was born on April 1, 1936, in a place called Rangajan Tea Estate in Assam, India. His family belonged to the Tai-Ahom group of people in Assam. His father, Kamaleshwar Gogoi, was a doctor. His mother, Usha Gogoi, was the younger sister of a famous Assamese poet named Ganesh Gogoi. Tarun Gogoi also had a younger brother, Dip Gogoi, who also became a politician.
Tarun Gogoi started his schooling at a local school. He later went to Jorhat Madrassa School and Bholaguri High School. He finished his high school studies at Jorhat Government High School. After that, he went to Jagannath Barooah College. He earned his law degree (LLB) from Gauhati University.
Political Journey
Tarun Gogoi began his political career in 1968. He first became a member of the local city board in Jorhat. In 1971, he was elected to the Lok Sabha from Jorhat. The Lok Sabha is one of the two houses of the Indian Parliament. He represented Jorhat for three terms until 1985. Later, he represented the Kaliabor area in the Lok Sabha for three more terms. He left the Lok Sabha in 2001 to become the Chief Minister of Assam. In total, he served six terms as a Member of Parliament.
In 1976, he became a Joint Secretary of the All India Congress Committee (AICC). This was when Indira Gandhi was the Prime Minister. Later, from 1985 to 1990, he served as the General Secretary of the AICC. This was during the time Rajiv Gandhi was Prime Minister. From 1991 to 1996, he was a Union Minister of State in the Indian government. He was in charge of the Ministry of Food Processing Industries.
He also led the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) twice. This is the state branch of the Congress party. He served four terms as a Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) in Assam. He represented the Margherita area first, and then the Titabar area.
Becoming Chief Minister
Tarun Gogoi became the Chief Minister of Assam in 2001. He led the Indian National Congress party to win the state elections. His party won 70 seats in the Assam Legislative Assembly. He took over from the previous government.
First Term (2001-2006)
When Gogoi became Chief Minister, Assam was facing big challenges. There was a lot of violence from militant groups. The state was also in financial trouble, with a lot of debt. Government workers were not even getting their salaries on time.
Gogoi worked hard to improve things. He started programs to help people find jobs and reduce terrorism. He also set up a Police Commission to help the administration work better. A Chief Vigilance Commission was created to fight corruption. The Right to Information bill was also introduced.
In 2003, some opposition parties tried to remove him from power. They said his government had corruption issues and that law and order was bad. Gogoi replied that these claims were false. He said his government was working to improve the state's economy and reduce violence. The attempt to remove him failed.
Second Term (2006-2011)
In the 2006 state elections, Gogoi's party won again. They formed a government with another party, the Bodoland Peoples’ Front (BPF). During this term, the law and order situation in Assam got much better. The state's financial health also improved.
Gogoi focused on making sure that central government programs were carried out well in Assam. He also worked to bring new industries to the state. He tried to solve the problems with militant groups through talks and negotiations.
Third Term (2011-2016)
In the 2011 state elections, Gogoi's Congress party won a big victory. They secured 78 seats, showing strong support from the people. However, in the 2016 elections, his party did not win. Sarbananda Sonowal from the Bharatiya Janata Party became the new Chief Minister.
His Impact on Assam
Tarun Gogoi is remembered for several important things he did for Assam. He is praised for bringing many militant groups, like the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA), to talk about peace. He greatly reduced violence in the state. When he started, there were many bomb blasts and riots. By the end of his time, Assam was much more peaceful.
He also helped improve Assam's money situation. The state was almost bankrupt, but he helped turn the economy around. He started many development projects, especially in rural areas. These projects helped keep money within the state and encouraged growth.
During his time, the process of updating the National Register of Citizens for Assam also began. This is a list of legal citizens in the state.
After his death, Tarun Gogoi was given the Padma Bhushan award in 2021. This was a recognition of his great service to the public.
Family Life
Tarun Gogoi married Dolly Gogoi on July 30, 1972. She had studied Zoology at Gauhati University. They had two children: a daughter named Chandrima and a son named Gaurav Gogoi. Gaurav Gogoi is also a Member of Parliament like his father. He studied Public administration in New York. Tarun Gogoi enjoyed playing Golf as a hobby.
He traveled to many countries during his life. By 2014, he had made 18 official trips to places like Indonesia, Singapore, the UK, the US, China, Japan, and many others.
Health Challenges
Tarun Gogoi had several heart surgeries during his time as Chief Minister. These included Bypass surgery and other procedures to help his heart. He even had a surgery to replace his Artificial cardiac pacemaker just before the 2011 elections. Despite these health issues, he recovered and led his party to victory for a third term.
Passing Away
Tarun Gogoi tested positive for COVID-19 on August 25, 2020. He was admitted to the Guwahati Medical College and Hospital. After some time, he tested negative for COVID-19. However, he was readmitted to the ICU due to problems after having COVID-19.
On November 21, he suffered from multiple organ failure. He was put on a ventilator. His family, including his son Gaurav and daughter Chandrima, were with him. On November 23, 2020, Tarun Gogoi passed away at the age of 84. His death was caused by complications from COVID-19 and organ failure. He was survived by his wife, children, and grandchildren.
Tributes and Funeral
Many important leaders in India expressed their sadness at Tarun Gogoi's passing. This included Prime Minister Narendra Modi, President Ram Nath Kovind, and Rahul Gandhi. Many other chief ministers and politicians also paid their respects.
His body was kept at a cultural center in Guwahati for people to pay their last tributes. The Chief Minister of Assam, Sarbananda Sonowal, announced three days of state mourning. On November 25, Rahul Gandhi visited Guwahati to pay tribute to Gogoi and meet his family.
Tarun Gogoi's funeral procession took place on November 26. His body was taken to his home, then to a church, a Naamghar (a prayer house), a mosque, and a temple. This was done according to his wishes. His final rites were performed with full state honors at the Nabagraha Cremation ground in Guwahati. His son, Gaurav Gogoi, lit the funeral pyre. Many politicians and important people were present to pay their respects.
