The Story of MDH Spices
How MDH Began
The story of MDH began in 1919. Mahashay Chunnilal Gulati set up the spice company. It was in Sialkot, which was part of British India back then. Today, Sialkot is in the Punjab province of Pakistan. The company is also connected to the Mahashay Chunnilal Charitable Trust.
Moving to Delhi
Mahashay Dharampal Gulati, the founder's son, moved to Delhi after India was divided in 1947. He started by opening a small shop in a shack. There, he sold spices, just like his father did. Later, he opened a bigger shop on Ajmal Khan Road in Karol Bagh. From there, his business grew a lot. In 1959, he bought land in Kirti Nagar to build his own spice factory.
Growing into a Big Company
From that small start, Dharampal Gulati built MDH into one of India's top spice makers. The company now has 15 factories. He once said that his goal was to sell good quality products at fair prices. He also gave almost 90% of his own salary to charity.
In 2017, when he was 94 years old, Dharam Pal was the highest-paid CEO in the Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) industry in India. He earned a large salary that year. On March 16, 2019, the 14th President of India, Ram Nath Kovind, gave him the Padma Bhushan award. This is a very high honor for his work in Trade & Industry.
