The Story of MDH Spices
How MDH Began
The story of MDH began in 1919. A man named Mahashay Chunnilal Gulati started a spice business. He set it up in a place called Sialkot. This area was part of British India at the time. Today, Sialkot is in Pakistan.
Moving to Delhi
After India became independent in 1947, Mahashay Dharampal Gulati moved to Delhi. He was the son of the founder, Mahashay Chunnilal Gulati. Dharampal Gulati started selling spices from a small shop. He wanted to continue his father's business.
Later, he opened a bigger shop in Karol Bagh, Delhi. His business grew steadily from there. In 1959, he bought land in Kirti Nagar. This is where he built his very own spice factory.
Growing the Business
From that first factory, Dharampal Gulati built MDH into a huge company. It became one of India's top spice makers. MDH now has 15 factories. He once said that his goal was to sell good quality products at fair prices. He also gave almost all of his salary to charity.
In 2017, when he was 94 years old, Dharam Pal was the highest-paid CEO in India's Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) industry. This means he earned a lot of money as a leader in a company that sells everyday products. In 2019, he received the Padma Bhushan award. This is a very important award from the President of India, Ram Nath Kovind. It recognized his work in trade and industry.

Helping Others
Schools and Hospitals
Mahashay Dharampal Gulati believed in helping the community. Under his leadership, MDH helped build more than 20 schools. Some of these schools are MDH International School and Mahashay Chunnilal Saraswati Shishu Mandir. The latter is named after his father.
He also started hospitals to help people. In 1975, he opened a small eye hospital. Later, in 1984, a larger hospital was built in Janakpuri, New Delhi. This hospital was named after his mother, Mata Chanan Devi. Now, this hospital has 300 beds. It has modern equipment to help patients with many different health needs.
