Macaé Esporte Futebol Clube, often called Macaé, is a professional football team from Brazil. They are based in the city of Macaé, in the Rio de Janeiro state. This team plays in the Campeonato Carioca, which is the main football league in the Rio de Janeiro state.

The History of Macaé Football Club

Macaé Esporte Futebol Clube is the most popular team in its city. It was started on July 17, 1990. Back then, it was known as Botafogo Futebol Clube. For eight years, the team only played in amateur games. They won their first titles in the mid-1990s, becoming champions in Macaé city in 1994 and 1995.

Becoming a Professional Team

In 1998, the club became a professional team. This was a big step for them. In their very first professional season, the team, still called Botafogo, won the State Third Division championship. That same year, they were also runners-up in the Copa Rio do Interior. They reached the semifinals of the Copa Rio da Capital but were beaten by Fluminense.

New Name and New Leagues

In 1999, the club changed its name to Macaé Sports. They played in the State Second Division and finished as runners-up. In 2000, the club officially changed its name again to Macaé Esporte Futebol Clube. In 2002, they almost reached the top league in Rio de Janeiro but were runners-up in the Second Division once more. This happened again in 2006.

Joining National Competitions

Macaé first played in a national competition in 2003. They joined the Campeonato Brasileiro Série C, which is a national league in Brazil. This was an important moment for the club.

Great Achievements in the 2010s

The year 2009 was one of the best for Macaé. They finished fifth in the Campeonato Carioca, right behind the four biggest teams in the state. This success earned them a spot in the Campeonato Brasileiro Série D. In that competition, Macaé finished as runners-up.

The club's biggest achievement came in 2014. Macaé won the Campeonato Brasileiro Série C title! They secured the win with a 3-3 draw against Paysandu. This victory also meant they would move up to the Campeonato Brasileiro Série B the next year.

Macaé's Home Stadium

Macaé plays its home games at a stadium called Estádio Cláudio Moacyr. This stadium can hold up to 16,000 people. It's where fans gather to cheer on their team.
