The village of Macedonia got its name from the ancient kingdom of Macedonia. This kingdom was a powerful place in ancient Greece.

Macedonia is located in southern Illinois. It is about 15 miles (24 kilometers) northeast of Benton, which is the main town for Franklin County. It's also about 12 miles (19 kilometers) west of McLeansboro, the main town for Hamilton County.
