The Story of Mackintosh's Toffee
How It All Began
The story of Mackintosh's Toffee started in 1890. A man named John Mackintosh opened his sweet shop. This shop was in Halifax, a town in Yorkshire, England. Soon after, he came up with the idea for his special toffee.
Growing Bigger
Over the years, the Mackintosh Company grew. In 1969, it joined with another sweet company called Rowntree. Together, they became Rowntree Mackintosh. Later, in 1988, a very large food company, Nestlé, bought Rowntree Mackintosh. This means Nestlé now owns Mackintosh's Toffee. Many people think of this toffee as being over 100 years old!
What Makes Mackintosh's Toffee Special?
Flavors and Wrappers
Mackintosh's Toffee often comes in bags. Inside, you find many individually wrapped toffees. Each one has a different flavor and a colorful wrapper.
- Malt (Blue wrapper)
- Harrogate (Yellow wrapper)
- Mint (Green wrapper)
- Egg & Cream (Orange wrapper)
- Coconut (Pink wrapper)
- Toffee (Maroon wrapper)
The maroon-wrapped toffees are simply called "Toffee." They do not have a special flavor name on their wrapper.
Slogans and Sayings
This famous toffee has a special subtitle: "Toffee De Luxe." It also has a motto, which is like a slogan. The motto is "a tradition worth sharing." This means it's a sweet treat that families and friends can enjoy together.
The Harrogate Flavor
The "Harrogate" flavor has an interesting history. It was first made by candy makers in Harrogate. This is a spa town in Yorkshire. The toffee was created to help people get rid of the strong taste of the town's spa water.
Where You Can Find Mackintosh's Toffee
Toffee in Canada
Canada has its own version of Mackintosh's Toffee. For a long time, it was a hard candy bar. It was sold in a box with a tartan pattern. Around 2008, the Canadian toffee changed. It became individually wrapped and softer, more like a caramel. This version is made in Switzerland by Nestlé. Nestlé Canada sells it in Canada.
More recently, around 2013, Nestlé Canada started selling a hard Mackintosh bar again. It is thinner and wrapped in foil. This newer hard bar uses sweetened condensed milk for its main flavor. It has less of the creamy butter taste that the original Canadian Mackintosh toffee had.
Toffee Around the World
Nestlé does not sell Mackintosh's Toffee in the United States. However, you can sometimes order it online. You might also find it in special candy shops.
Mackintosh's Toffee was also made and sold in New Zealand. Nestlé New Zealand Limited sold it under their "Allen's" candy brand. But in 2018, Nestlé sold its New Zealand candy brands. Now, a company called RJ's in Levin makes the toffee there. The RJ's product made in New Zealand is also sold in Australia.
