Rowntree Mackintosh Confectionery was a British company that made yummy chocolates and candies! It was created when two big candy companies, Rowntree's and John Mackintosh Co., joined together. They were famous for making popular treats like Kit Kat, Aero, and Quality Street.

Later, in 1988, a company called Nestlé bought Rowntree Mackintosh. Nestlé then started selling these products under its own name.

Rowntree Mackintosh used to have its main office and factory in Halifax. This factory is still used today to make Quality Street and other sweets. The original Rowntree's factory was in York. Nestlé still has one of the world's largest candy factories there!

The Story of Rowntree Mackintosh

How Rowntree's Began

The Rowntree's company started way back in 1862 in York, England. It was founded by Henry Isaac Rowntree. His brother, Joseph Rowntree, joined him a few years later in 1869.

At first, Rowntree's found it hard to make milk chocolate as good as other companies. But they became very successful with their fruit gums and pastilles. These candies started to be sold in their famous tube packaging in the late 1920s.

In the 1960s, Rowntree's began selling its products in Europe. They opened factories in places like Germany and France. They also launched the popular After Eights mints in 1962.

Joining Forces: Rowntree Mackintosh

In 1969, Rowntree's decided to team up with another candy company, John Mackintosh and Sons Ltd.. Together, they formed "Rowntree Mackintosh Ltd." This was a big step for both companies!

Mackintosh was known for making tasty treats like Rolo, Munchies, Caramac, and Quality Street. When they merged, Rowntree Mackintosh became a giant in the candy world.

Around this time, Rowntree Mackintosh also made a deal with Hershey in the United States. This allowed Hershey to make and sell Rowntree products, like Kit Kat, in the U.S.

In the years that followed, Rowntree Mackintosh grew even more. They opened new factories and even bought other candy companies. In 1976, they introduced two new chocolate bars: the Yorkie and the Lion bar.

Nestlé Buys Rowntree Mackintosh

In 1988, a very large Swiss company called Nestlé bought Rowntree Mackintosh Confectionery. This was a huge change for the company. Nestlé took over all the factories and offices.

After the purchase, Nestlé slowly started to bring back the "Rowntrees" name for some products. You can still find candies like Rowntrees Randoms and Fruit Pastilles today. These are some of the few sweets that still use the Rowntrees name, even though they are now part of Nestlé.
