Rolo is a popular candy that has a special shape, like a small, upside-down cone. Inside, it's filled with yummy, chewy caramel, and the outside is covered in smooth chocolate.
Rolo candies were first made in the United Kingdom in 1937 by a company called Mackintosh's. Later, another company, Rowntree's, took over making them. Today, most Rolos around the world are made by Nestlé. But if you're in the United States, your Rolos are made by The Hershey Company.
For a long time, a famous saying for Rolo was: "Do you love anyone enough to give them your last Rolo?" This slogan made people think about sharing their favorite treat.
The Sweet Story of Rolo
The idea for Rolo candies came from England. People at Mackintosh's wanted to combine soft caramel with a chocolate coating. They launched Rolo in the United Kingdom in 1937, and it quickly became a hit.
Rolo Around the World
In 1956, a company in the United States called the New England Confectionery Company started making Rolos under a special agreement. Then, in 1969, The Hershey Company took over making Rolos for the U.S. market.
In 1988, the big company Nestlé bought Rowntree, which meant they also got the Rolo brand. Since then, Rolo has become more than just a candy. You can find Rolo-flavored ice cream, muffins, birthday cakes, and even yoghurts! There are also mini Rolos and bigger Rolos.
In 2011, McDonald's even made a special McFlurry that tasted like Rolo, mixing chocolate pieces and caramel sauce. Later, in 2018, Walmart started selling Rolo ice cream cones and ice cream sandwiches.
Rolo Advertisements
Rolo has had some memorable advertisements over the years. One famous ad from 1996 was called "Elephant." In this ad, a young boy tricks an elephant. Years later, the elephant gets its revenge, playing on the idea that "elephants never forget." This ad was so good that it won a big award at the Cannes Lions International Advertising Festival.
From 1980 to 2003, the well-known slogan "Do you love anyone enough to give them your last Rolo?" was used in many advertisements. It made people think about sharing their last Rolo with someone special.
