Rolo is a popular candy that has a yummy caramel center covered in chocolate. These treats are shaped like small cones with a flat top. They are called "Rolo" because they often come in a roll of chocolates.

Rolo candies were first made in 1937 in the United Kingdom by a company called Mackintosh's. Later, Rowntree's took over making them. Today, most Rolos around the world are made by Nestlé. However, in the United States, another company, The Hershey Company, makes them under a special agreement.

For many years, a famous saying for Rolo in Britain was: "Do you love anyone enough to give them your last Rolo?" This slogan made people think about sharing their favorite candy. A recent survey showed that Rolo is one of the most liked and well-known candies in the UK.

The Sweet History of Rolo

The idea for Rolo candies came from England. The creators at Mackintosh's simply combined soft caramel with a chocolate coating. This delicious combination was first sold in the United Kingdom in 1937.

In 1956, a company in the United States called the New England Confectionery Company started making Rolos there. Later, in 1969, The Hershey Company took over the right to make Rolos for the US market.

In 1988, the big company Nestlé bought Rowntree and all its candy brands, including Rolo. Since then, many different Rolo-flavored products have been created. You can find Rolo ice cream, muffins, birthday cakes, and even yogurts. There are also mini Rolos and bigger Rolos.

In May 2011, McDonald's even made a special McFlurry that tasted like Rolo. It had chocolate pieces and caramel sauce mixed into their soft-serve ice cream. More recently, in December 2018, Walmart stores in the US began selling Rolo ice cream cones and ice cream sandwiches.

In the UK, Rolos are still made at Nestlé's factory in Newcastle upon Tyne.

Rolo Advertisements and Slogans

Rolo has had some memorable advertisements over the years. One famous Rolo commercial, called "Elephant," won a big award in 1996 at the Cannes Lions International Advertising Festival. In this ad, a young boy plays a trick on an elephant. Many years later, the elephant gets its revenge, showing that "elephants never forget."

From 1980 to 2003, Rolo used the well-known advertising slogan: "Do you love anyone enough to give them your last Rolo?" This slogan encouraged people to think about sharing their candy with someone special.
