Mackintosh's Toffee is a popular sweet treat. It was first made by the Mackintosh Company. John Mackintosh started his sweet shop in Halifax, England, in 1890. He soon came up with the idea for his special toffee. It was known for being "not too hard and not too soft." This tasty toffee has been around for over 100 years! Over time, the company joined with others. First, Mackintosh's joined with Rowntree in 1969. Then, this new company became part of Nestlé in 1988.

What Flavors Can You Find?

Mackintosh's Toffee comes in bags. Inside, you will find different wrapped toffees. Each one has its own flavor and wrapper color.

Popular Toffee Flavors

  • Malt (Blue wrapper)
  • Harrogate (Yellow wrapper)
  • Mint (Green wrapper)
  • Egg & Cream (Orange wrapper)
  • Coconut (Pink wrapper)
  • Toffee (Maroon wrapper)

The maroon-wrapped toffees do not show a flavor name. The toffee's special name is "Toffee De Luxe." Its motto is "a tradition worth sharing."

The Harrogate Flavor Story

The Harrogate flavor has an interesting history. It was first made by candy makers in Harrogate, a spa town in Yorkshire. They created this flavor for a special reason. The town's spa waters had a strong taste. The toffee helped to remove that taste.

Where is Mackintosh's Toffee Sold?

Mackintosh's Toffee is enjoyed in many places. The toffee sold in different countries can be a bit different.

Toffee in Canada

Canada has its own special version of Mackintosh's Toffee. For a long time, it was a hard candy. It was sold as a single bar in a box with a tartan design. Around 2008, the Canadian toffee changed. It became individually wrapped. This version is made in Switzerland by Nestlé. It is softer, more like a caramel.

More recently, around 2013, Nestlé Canada brought back a hard bar. It is thinner and wrapped in foil. This new bar has sweetened condensed milk for flavor. It has less of the creamy butter taste of the original Canadian toffee. Nestlé does not sell these toffees in the United States. However, you can sometimes order them online. You might also find them in special candy stores.

Toffee in New Zealand and Australia

Mackintosh's Toffee was also made and sold in New Zealand. Nestlé New Zealand Limited sold it under their "Allen's" candy brand. In 2018, Nestlé sold its candy brands in New Zealand. Now, a company called RJ's in Levin makes the toffees. The RJ's product made in New Zealand is also sold in Australia.
