Madawi al-Rasheed was born in Paris, France. Her father was from Saudi Arabia and her mother was from Lebanon. Her father's family was part of the old Rashidi dynasty. Soon after she was born, her family moved to Saudi Arabia. She grew up there.

In 1975, something important happened. The King of Saudi Arabia, Faisal of Saudi Arabia, was sadly killed. His killer was a nephew whose mother was related to Madawi's father. Because of this, the Saudi government thought the Rashidi family might be involved.

Later, it was found that this was not true. But in 1975, Madawi's family moved to Lebanon. She finished her high school studies there in 1981. After that, she started studying anthropology and sociology. She studied at the American University of Beirut.

In 1982, Israel invaded Lebanon. This meant Madawi had to leave her home again. She moved to the UK. First, she went to Salford University. Then, she went to the University of Cambridge. There, she earned her PhD degree.

In 2005, Madawi al-Rasheed spoke on Al Jazeera TV. She talked about the Saudi government. After this, her Saudi citizenship was taken away. This was a punishment for her comments on TV.

Madawi al-Rasheed was also a target of the Pegasus spyware. This is a type of software used to spy on people's phones. Luckily, the attack on her device did not work.
