The Madonna of the Fish, also called Madonna with the Fish, is a beautiful painting by the famous artist Raphael. He was a master of the High Renaissance period.
This painting shows Mary, the mother of Jesus, sitting on a grand throne with Jesus on her lap. On one side, you can see St. Jerome kneeling. He is a saint known for translating the Bible into Latin. He is often shown with a Lion, which is next to him in the painting.
On the other side, the archangel Raphael is introducing a young boy named Tobias to Mary and Jesus. Tobias holds a special fish. This fish is important to his story. The archangel Raphael had guided Tobias on a journey to the River Tigris. There, Tobias caught this miraculous fish. Its heart, liver, and gall were used to help his father see again and to protect his future wife from evil spirits.
The story of Tobias and the archangel Raphael shows protection, especially for young people. The painting is believed to have been made around 1512–1514. It might have been painted to celebrate the Book of Tobit becoming part of the official books of the Roman Catholic Church. St. Jerome translated the Book of Tobit into Latin, which is why he is shown in the painting.
Today, the Madonna with the Fish is kept at the Museo del Prado in Madrid, Spain.
